PM Modi will visit Assam on September 13-14 to inaugurate Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations in Guwahati. During the two-day trip, he will also launch major projects, including a bio-ethanol plant, Guwahati Ring Road, a new Brahmaputra bridge, and Mangaldoi Medical College.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Assam from September 13 to 14, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday. The visit, which was initially scheduled for September 8, has been rescheduled in view of the Vice Presidential elections set for September 9.
Unlike the earlier plan of a one-day tour, the Prime Minister will now spend a night in Guwahati, making the trip more extensive and eventful. The highlight of his visit will be his participation in the birth centenary celebrations of legendary cultural icon and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
National Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika
On September 13, PM Modi will inaugurate the official centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati. Known as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra,” Hazarika remains one of India’s most celebrated cultural figures. His six-decade-long career as a singer, composer, lyricist, filmmaker, and writer left an indelible imprint on Indian art and culture.
Hazarika’s music transcended regional boundaries, blending Assamese folk traditions with universal humanist values. His compositions often carried themes of brotherhood, social justice, and empathy. Among them, the iconic song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” continues to resonate across generations as a timeless message of humanity and harmony.
The centenary year has already been marked by a series of cultural initiatives across Assam, including large-scale singing events, exhibitions, and mass participation by artistes. PM Modi’s presence at the celebrations is expected to provide national recognition, reinforcing Hazarika’s role as a symbol of India’s cultural unity.
“Bhupen da belonged to Assam but his message touched the world. The Prime Minister’s presence will be a befitting tribute,” said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma while announcing the revised schedule.
The state government will separately observe the birth anniversary of Hazarika on September 8 with state-level programmes. The celebration committee is expected to finalise the details of the events on Thursday.
Key Development Projects on the Agenda
PM Modi’s two-day Assam itinerary will not be limited to cultural commemorations. On September 14, the Prime Minister will travel to Mangaldoi in Darrang district to inaugurate and lay the foundation for several ambitious infrastructure projects.
These include:
-
Inauguration of the Guwahati Ring Road Project, aimed at easing traffic congestion in the state capital and improving regional connectivity.
-
Commissioning of a bridge over the Brahmaputra, linking Kuruwa and Narengi, which is expected to enhance communication and reduce travel time.
-
Foundation laying of Mangaldoi Medical College and Hospital, strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to medical education.
Later in the day, Modi will visit Numaligarh in Golaghat district, where he will dedicate to the nation a ₹4,200-crore bio-ethanol plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL). The project is a major step toward India’s energy self-reliance and green energy goals, as it will promote biofuel production and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Assam’s Cultural and Developmental Milestone
The visit is being viewed as a dual milestone for Assam, combining the recognition of its cultural heritage with progress on infrastructure and energy development. The juxtaposition of Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary celebrations with the unveiling of new projects highlights the state’s blend of tradition and modernity.
For the people of Assam, the Prime Minister’s participation in the celebrations of their most beloved cultural icon is expected to strike a deeply emotional chord. At the same time, the unveiling of developmental projects promises tangible benefits for the state’s future growth.
