PM Modi begins a three-nation visit to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman to strengthen strategic partnerships, boost trade, engage the Indian diaspora, and reinforce India’s role in West Asia, Africa and the Global South through high-level diplomatic talks.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday embarked on a significant three-nation diplomatic visit to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, aimed at deepening India’s strategic, economic and cultural partnerships across West Asia and Africa. The visit underscores India’s growing global engagement and its focus on strengthening ties with key regional partners.
In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s enduring civilisational connections and expanding contemporary relations with all three nations. He described the tour as an opportunity to reinforce cooperation in areas ranging from trade and investment to political dialogue and people-to-people exchanges.
The first leg of the visit takes the Prime Minister to Jordan, following an invitation from King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. The visit marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan, a milestone reflecting decades of mutual trust and cooperation.
During his stay in Amman, PM Modi is scheduled to hold extensive discussions with King Abdullah II, Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. The talks are expected to focus on regional stability, defense cooperation, trade expansion, and cultural collaboration.
Prime Minister Modi will also interact with members of the Indian community in Jordan, acknowledging their significant role in strengthening bilateral relations. The Indian diaspora in Jordan has been actively contributing to sectors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure, serving as a vital bridge between the two nations.
From Jordan, the Prime Minister will travel to Ethiopia at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. This visit holds particular importance as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ethiopia since 2011.
Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, is also the headquarters of the African Union, a body that became a permanent member of the G20 during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023. The visit reflects India’s growing engagement with Africa and its commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South on international platforms.
In Addis Ababa, PM Modi will hold detailed bilateral talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, focusing on economic cooperation, development partnerships, and multilateral coordination. He will also meet members of the Indian diaspora, who have long been engaged in trade, manufacturing and education sectors in Ethiopia.
A key highlight of the Ethiopia visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s address to a Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament. He is expected to share India’s democratic journey, referring to the country as the “Mother of Democracy,” and outline how India–Ethiopia cooperation can contribute to inclusive global growth.
The final leg of the Prime Minister’s tour will take him to Oman, marking his second visit to the Gulf nation. This year, India and Oman are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations, making the visit symbolically significant.
In Muscat, PM Modi will hold high-level talks with the Sultan of Oman, focusing on strengthening the India–Oman Strategic Partnership. Discussions are expected to cover energy security, trade, investment, maritime cooperation and regional security.
Prime Minister Modi will also address a gathering of the Indian diaspora in Oman, recognizing their immense contribution to Oman’s development and to the strengthening of bilateral ties. The Indian community plays a crucial role in sectors such as construction, healthcare, logistics and energy.
