Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged comprehensive support to the northeastern states severely impacted by Cyclone Remal. During a high-level meeting at his residence on Sunday, the Prime Minister reviewed the cyclone’s devastating effects and directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to regularly monitor the situation, ensuring timely assistance for restoring essential services.
The meeting, attended by senior officials including the Principal Secretary to the PM, Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, DG NDRF, and Member Secretary of NDMA, focused on the extensive damage caused by the cyclone. The officials briefed PM Modi on the tragic loss of lives and the widespread destruction of homes and properties due to landslides and floods in Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya.
Cyclone Remal has claimed at least 36 lives in the region, with Mizoram being the hardest hit, where 27 people perished, including 21 victims of a quarry collapse in the Aizawl district. Nagaland reported four fatalities, Assam three, and Meghalaya two
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a rapid and effective disaster response. He noted that NDRF teams have been deployed to the affected areas, conducting evacuations, airlifting operations, and road clearance to mitigate the cyclone’s impact.
In addition to addressing the cyclone’s aftermath, PM Modi chaired a separate meeting to discuss the heatwave gripping northern and central India, where temperatures have soared above 45 degrees Celsius in several cities. The government is focused on implementing measures to protect the population from the extreme heat.
Sources revealed that the Prime Minister’s schedule for the day also included preparations for World Environment Day celebrations and a brainstorming session to outline the agenda for the first 100 days of the newly anticipated NDA government. Exit polls on Saturday suggested a landslide victory for the BJP-led alliance, predicting over 350 seats and a third consecutive term for PM Modi.
