Paapa Essiedu’s new drama Babies tackles pregnancy loss with emotional depth, aiming to break stigma and spark meaningful conversations. The actor highlights vulnerability, grief, and relationships, urging society to openly discuss a rarely addressed yet deeply human experience.

English actor Paapa Essiedu is stepping into emotionally challenging territory with his latest drama series Babies, expressing hope that the show will spark meaningful societal conversations around pregnancy loss — a subject often surrounded by silence and stigma.

The 35-year-old actor stars alongside Siobhan Cullen in the series, which explores the deeply personal journey of a couple in their 30s grappling with the emotional aftermath of losing a pregnancy. The narrative not only focuses on grief but also examines how such a loss can strain relationships, communication, and emotional resilience.

Speaking to the BBC, Essiedu emphasized the importance of initiating dialogue on this sensitive issue. “If it makes one person able to talk about pregnancy loss when they previously couldn’t, I think the show will have been a success,” he said, underlining the broader purpose behind the project.

The actor, who is also set to portray Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, revealed that he undertook extensive research to prepare for his role in Babies. Working closely with medical professionals and midwives, Essiedu sought to gain insight into an experience he had not encountered personally.

“There’s a sensitivity around any kind of grief and an assumption that those questions shouldn’t be asked,” Essiedu noted. “That can lead to stigma and shame, and that’s when people feel isolated and alone.”

The show is created, written, and directed by Stefan Golaszewski, known for his nuanced storytelling that often delves into complex human emotions. According to Essiedu, one of the central themes of the series is vulnerability — a concept he describes as both daunting and essential for human connection.

“It’s awful and you feel naked and open to attack because you worry about being rejected,” he explained. “But when that rejection doesn’t happen, that’s where intimacy and close relationships start to grow.”

Cullen, 36, also approached her role with emotional authenticity, drawing from real-life experiences shared by women close to her. She acknowledged the courage of those who opened up about their journeys through pregnancy loss and parenthood.

“Many of them have gone through something similar to Lisa,” Cullen shared. “They were very generous in sharing their experiences and the journey to becoming a parent.”

The project has also garnered praise from Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, who highlighted the series’ rare and sensitive portrayal of a topic seldom addressed on television. She described Babies as “a tender, authentic, emotional and human look” at couples navigating one of life’s most difficult experiences.
