Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized strengthening public trust in the nursing profession through advanced training, skill development, and responsible healthcare services while highlighting major healthcare achievements and upcoming medical infrastructure projects in the state.
Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, and public trust in medical institutions largely depends on their professionalism, efficiency, and behaviour, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Tuesday while addressing a programme organized to mark International Nurses Day in Agartala.
The event was held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in the presence of senior health officials, members of the Tripura Nursing Council, medical education authorities, nursing students, and healthcare professionals from across the state.
Speaking at the programme, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of strengthening public confidence in the nursing profession through improved training, enhanced skills, and responsible service delivery. He said nurses perform a crucial role in maintaining and improving healthcare standards and often serve as the primary point of interaction between patients and hospitals.
According to the Chief Minister, the reputation and credibility of hospitals are significantly influenced by the conduct and efficiency of nursing staff. He urged nurses to continue working with dedication and compassion while adapting to modern healthcare challenges.
He also acknowledged that nursing professionals frequently face both internal and external challenges during their duties. Successfully overcoming these difficulties, he said, contributes to greater professional experience, confidence, and efficiency in healthcare delivery.
Highlighting the importance of a strong nursing framework, the Chief Minister stated that no healthcare system can function effectively without skilled and dedicated nurses. He encouraged nursing professionals working in hospitals and healthcare institutions across Tripura to discharge their responsibilities with sincerity and commitment.

Referring to International Nurses Day, Florence Nightingale, the Chief Minister said the day is observed annually on May 12 to honour the immense contribution of nurses to society and healthcare services worldwide. He noted that several programmes were organized in connection with the occasion, while the main celebration took place on Tuesday at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan.
During his address, the Chief Minister also highlighted major developments in Tripura’s healthcare sector over the last few years. He claimed that the state had achieved an 80 percent reduction in patient referral cases, which he described as a significant improvement in local healthcare services and infrastructure.
He further announced that a new medical college would be established in the ADC area to strengthen medical education and healthcare accessibility in the region. Additionally, the process for setting up a 50-bed super-speciality hospital in the state is currently underway.
The Chief Minister informed that the state government is prepared to provide land for the proposed hospital project and added that investors have already shown interest in supporting the initiative. The proposed facility is expected to improve advanced healthcare treatment facilities within the state and reduce the need for patients to travel outside Tripura for specialized medical care.
