Union Minister Harsh Malhotra highlights Northeast India’s transformation with 10,000 km of National Highways built at ₹1.07 lakh crore. He emphasizes infrastructure as the foundation of economic growth and PM Modi’s vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 at the Indian Roads Congress meeting in Mizoram.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Harsh Malhotra, on Friday emphasized the transformative impact of infrastructure development in Northeast India, declaring that the region’s progress is a testament to the vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047. Speaking at the 233rd Mid-Term Council Meeting of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) held at Mizoram University Campus, Malhotra underlined that the construction of nearly 10,000 kilometers of National Highways in the region over the past 11 years has laid the foundation for long-term economic growth and connectivity.

The extensive highway development, completed at an estimated cost of over ₹1.07 lakh crore, has drastically improved access to remote and border areas across the Northeast. “Infrastructure is not just about concrete and steel—it is the foundation of economic growth, the pathway to prosperity, and a key symbol of the Prime Minister’s vision for Viksit Bharat by 2047,” said Malhotra, highlighting the inclusive and sustainable nature of India’s development strategy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Malhotra pointed out that infrastructure development serves as a catalyst for regional development and social upliftment. “A good and robust road network brings prosperity to the region,” he said, emphasizing how better roads enhance trade, tourism, healthcare access, and education while generating employment opportunities and strengthening national security in border states.

The Minister noted that in the last 11 years, the total length of National Highways in India has seen a significant 60 percent increase—from 91,000 km in 2014 to approximately 1.47 lakh km today. He described this achievement as a milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a globally competitive and resilient economy.

The event saw participation from key dignitaries including Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, State Minister Vanlalhlana, and Member of Parliament Richard Vanlalhmangaiha. The presence of these leaders reflected a strong collaborative spirit between the Centre and states in driving infrastructure projects forward.

Malhotra also laid emphasis on the importance of adopting globally proven technologies and construction methods to enhance efficiency while reducing costs. “It is imperative that we not only speed up construction but also ensure sustainability,” he stated. He urged engineers and policymakers to integrate eco-friendly methodologies and cutting-edge technologies in their planning and execution of road projects.

Highlighting the Indian Roads Congress’ pivotal role in this transformation, Malhotra praised the organization for its continued contribution to standardizing road and bridge construction practices across the country. “The works on National Highways are executed according to the quality and safety standards laid down by the Government and IRC codes,” he added.

Founded as a forum for engineers and professionals in the road construction sector, the Indian Roads Congress now functions as a multi-dimensional body with members from Central and State Governments, the Engineering Services of the Army, and the Border Roads Organisation, among others. It continues to serve as a cornerstone institution in shaping India’s transportation policies and execution strategies.

Malhotra concluded by reaffirming the Centre’s unwavering commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in the Northeastern region, considering it integral to national growth and integration. The ongoing focus on sustainable, inclusive, and quality road construction projects aligns with India’s long-term goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

As India continues to invest heavily in infrastructure across all regions, the Northeast stands out as a shining example of how strategic investments can transform not just the landscape but the lives of millions.
