New Delhi/IBNS: The counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate or NEET-UG 2024 has been deferred until further notice, media reports said.

This comes after the Supreme Court refused to defer the counselling process, which was scheduled to begin on July 6.

The top court will hear the various pleas related to the paperleak allegations in the NEET-UG 2024 on July 8.

Slamming the government, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X, The whole NEET-UG issue is getting worse by the day.

The non-biological PM and his biological Education Minister are adding further proof to their demonstrated incompetence and insensitivity. The future of lakhs of our youth is simply unsafe in their hands.

Over 9 lakh candidates appeared for the exam, which is held for Assistant Professor recruitments in universities and colleges as well as to determine eligibility for junior research fellowships.

Days later, the joint CSIR-UGC-NET examination was also postponed amid the huge paper leak row.

For the past few days, student organisations have been staging protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG and the cancellation of UGC-NET exams.

The Union Education Ministry responded, stating that the reported malpractices were limited in scope and isolated incidents. They emphasised that it would be unfair to penalise the careers of the many candidates who legitimately passed these exams.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained two accused from Patna named Manish Kumar and Ashutosh in connection with the alleged scam.

The controversy arose when 67 students achieved perfect scores of 720 in the NEET-UG exam.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) said this happened as some candidates were awarded grace marks due to a faulty question and logistical delays in paper distribution at some centers.

However, a Bihar Police investigation revealed that the exam paper had been leaked to a select group of candidates.

The NEET-UG exam, taken by nearly 24 lakh aspiring medical students, was held on May 5, and the results were released on June 4.

Despite the NTAs efforts to manage the situation, allegations of a widespread leak continued with protests and legal actions nationwide.
