The NDA secures all five Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar, delivering a major political blow to the Opposition Mahagathbandhan. Strong NDA numbers in the Assembly ensure victory for candidates including Nitish Kumar, Upendra Kushwaha, and Nitin Nabin.

In a political development, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a sweeping victory in the Rajya Sabha elections held for five seats from the state of Bihar. All five candidates backed by the ruling alliance secured wins, underlining the coalition’s numerical dominance in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and delivering a major setback to the Opposition Mahagathbandhan.

The victorious NDA candidates include Nitish Kumar, Nitin Nabin, Ram Nath Thakur, Upendra Kushwaha, and Shivesh Ram. Their victories were confirmed after the counting of votes concluded on Monday evening, reinforcing the ruling alliance’s grip on the state’s parliamentary representation.

NDA’s Assembly Strength Proves Decisive

The election outcome was largely shaped by the NDA’s commanding strength in the 243-member Assembly. Out of the total votes cast, 202 legislators aligned with the NDA participated in the polling process, while 37 members belonging to the Opposition Mahagathbandhan also voted.

With six candidates in the contest for five Rajya Sabha seats, the ruling coalition’s overwhelming numbers played a decisive role in the final results. The Opposition alliance, which includes parties such as the Indian National Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, struggled to match the NDA’s voting strength.

Absence of Opposition MLAs Sparks Controversy

The voting process also witnessed controversy after several Opposition legislators failed to participate in the polling. Three MLAs from the Congress party — Manoj Biswas, Surendra Kushwaha, and Manohar Prasad Singh — along with RJD MLA Faisal Rahman, were absent during the voting session.

Responding to the situation, Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram alleged that the BJP had forcibly detained their legislators. According to Ram, the three Congress MLAs had been in regular contact with the party leadership since March 13 despite being in a BJP-ruled state.

He further claimed that the legislators were effectively placed under house arrest, raising serious concerns about political interference and the freedom of elected representatives. The BJP, however, has not officially responded to the allegations.

Voting Pattern and Counting Results

The counting of votes began at 5:00 p.m. and revealed a clear advantage for the ruling alliance. Based on first-preference votes, Nitish Kumar, Nitin Nabin, Ram Nath Thakur, and Upendra Kushwaha secured decisive victories.

The fifth NDA candidate, Shivesh Ram, initially fell short of the required number of first-preference votes but ultimately won the seat after securing additional support in the second-preference round.

The Opposition Mahagathbandhan’s candidate, A. D. Singh, received 38 votes but failed to cross the required threshold to secure a seat in the Upper House.

NDA Leaders Celebrate Victory

Following the announcement of results, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated BJP leader Nitin Nabin for his election to the Rajya Sabha. Choudhary praised Nabin’s leadership qualities, organizational abilities, and dedication to public service, expressing confidence that his presence in Parliament would help accelerate development initiatives for Bihar.

Another Deputy Chief Minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, also reacted strongly to the outcome, criticizing the Opposition alliance.

Today the real face of the RJD and Congress has been exposed,” Sinha said. “Their own legislators refused to vote for them. The public had already rejected them earlier, and now even their MLAs have distanced themselves.”

Political Implications Ahead

The NDA’s clean sweep in the Rajya Sabha elections is expected to strengthen the alliance’s influence both in the state and at the national level. With Bihar being a politically crucial state ahead of upcoming electoral battles, the result signals the ruling alliance’s organizational strength and unity.

For the Mahagathbandhan, however, the outcome raises serious questions about internal coordination and legislative discipline. The absence of key MLAs during a crucial vote has intensified political tensions and may further deepen the rivalry between the two blocs.

As Bihar’s representation in the Rajya Sabha expands with NDA-backed leaders, the political narrative in the state is likely to remain sharply contested in the months ahead.
