Nagaland Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla emphasized the state’s strategic role in India’s growth, highlighting opportunities in tourism, organic farming, entrepreneurship, and connectivity. Taking oath as the 22nd Governor, Bhalla pledged inclusive development, urging collective efforts to make Nagaland a vital partner in the nation’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Nagaland’s new Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, has called for inclusive growth and collective progress, stressing that the state, with its unique strengths and strategic location, has a crucial role to play in the larger national story.
Addressing the people of Nagaland after formally assuming charge as the 22nd Governor of the state, Bhalla emphasized that no one must be left behind in the journey toward development. He highlighted the state’s entrepreneurial youth, its strong traditions of organic farming and horticulture, and its vast untapped potential in tourism, art, and crafts as key assets for sustainable growth.
Sworn in as Nagaland’s 22nd Governor
Bhalla, who is also the Governor of Manipur, was given additional charge of Nagaland following the passing of Governor La. Ganesan on August 15 at the age of 80. The appointment was made by President Droupadi Murmu on August 16.
In a solemn ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Kohima, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Bhalla. The event was marked by simplicity, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion.
Rich Cultural Heritage and Scenic Beauty
In his address, Bhalla shared his admiration for Nagaland’s diversity, resilience, and natural charm. “Nagaland has always held a special fascination for me. The rich cultural diversity, the resilience of the people, and the scenic beauty of this land have a unique allure,” he said.
Having earlier served as Union Home Secretary for nearly five years, Bhalla noted that he had previously worked closely with the Northeast, including Nagaland, in various capacities during his government service. He described his return as Governor as a “blessing and privilege,” expressing his determination to contribute to the state’s development as its “first citizen.”
Priorities for Development
Bhalla stressed that while Nagaland has made significant progress, certain areas require urgent and focused attention. He highlighted four priority sectors:
-
Connectivity: Improving transport and digital connectivity to integrate Nagaland more deeply with national and global networks.
-
Healthcare: Expanding access to medical services and infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
-
Education & Skills: Enhancing quality education and skill development to empower the state’s children and youth.
-
Employment & Entrepreneurship: Creating more opportunities for jobs and innovation by harnessing the state’s entrepreneurial spirit.
He assured the state government of his full cooperation in achieving these goals and pledged to work in close partnership with all stakeholders for the welfare of the people.
Nagaland’s Role in National Growth
Pointing to India’s growing stature on the global stage, Bhalla described the country as “the world’s fastest-growing major economy, a beacon of stability and growth.” He said India’s economic strength and rising global profile place a responsibility on every state, including Nagaland, to contribute actively to the vision of a “Viksit Bharat by 2047” — a fully developed India in the centenary year of independence.
“For our nation to grow stronger and realize this dream, every region and every state must be an equal partner in this progress,” he remarked.
Call for Unity and Shared Progress
Bhalla appealed to the people of Nagaland to join hands with the government, civil society, tribal bodies, and all sections of the community in the pursuit of inclusive development. He underlined the importance of collective effort, urging citizens to ensure that Nagaland not only keeps pace with the nation’s growth but also becomes a shining example of India’s developmental ethos.
