Manipur has reported 243 active COVID-19 cases despite a drop in the positivity rate to 26%. Most cases are concentrated in Imphal West and East. Health officials urge public caution as the government boosts preparedness amid concerns of a potential resurgence.
Even as the COVID-19 positivity rate in Manipur shows signs of decline, the number of infections continues to rise, with the state recording a cumulative total of 243 active cases as of Sunday. Health authorities remain on alert as the virus spreads across several districts, with most cases concentrated in the Imphal Valley region.
According to a senior official from the Manipur Health and Family Welfare Department, of the 50 samples tested on Sunday, 13 returned positive results for COVID-19, indicating a daily positivity rate of 26 percent. Although this marks a notable decrease from 32.5 percent recorded on June 26 — a decline of 6.5 percentage points over four days — the spike in overall cases is a growing concern.
District-wise data reveals that Imphal West continues to be the epicenter of the latest surge, registering 166 cases. Imphal East followed with 54 cases, while Thoubal reported 10, Bishnupur 9, Tengnoupal 2, and one case each in Kakching and Chandel districts. Except for the tribal-dominated districts of Tengnoupal and Chandel, all the affected areas fall within the Imphal Valley — a region with higher population density and mobility.
Health Services Director Dr. Chambo Gonmei confirmed that the current wave began on June 9, when a 23-year-old woman from Bishnupur district tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, infections have steadily increased, prompting the government to call for public vigilance. As of Sunday, 89 individuals are under home isolation across the state.
Dr. Gonmei emphasized the importance of early detection, timely treatment, and public cooperation in curbing further transmission. He also warned that similar trends in other parts of the country could potentially affect Manipur if proper precautions are not taken.
In response to the situation, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla convened a high-level review meeting at Raj Bhavan to assess the state’s preparedness to deal with a possible resurgence of COVID-19. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, senior medical officers, and other key stakeholders from the Health Department.
During the session, the Governor stressed the need for proactive measures, robust medical infrastructure, and heightened public awareness. He urged officials to ensure that healthcare systems remain equipped to handle any escalation in cases.
The review meeting was prompted by recent directives from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which has advised all states and union territories to ramp up preparedness measures in anticipation of a nationwide resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
A Raj Bhavan spokesperson stated that officials presented detailed reports on the availability of medical diagnostics, protective gear, oxygen supply, ICU and isolation facilities, as well as stockpiles of essential drugs. Authorities also reviewed data integration through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) portal to ensure real-time monitoring and effective response.

Officials confirmed that while the positivity rate is beginning to fall, continued vigilance is essential to prevent another major outbreak. Citizens are advised to follow COVID-appropriate behavior, including wearing masks in crowded areas, maintaining hygiene, and seeking medical attention at the first sign of symptoms.
Manipur’s health authorities reiterated their commitment to contain the virus and called upon the public to remain cooperative and informed during this crucial period. With medical infrastructure on standby and government bodies coordinating closely, the state aims to curb further spread and protect vulnerable populations from the evolving health threat.
