Tripura CM Saha announces a zero-tolerance policy against drugs, inspired by PM Modi and HM Shah. With increased drug seizures, de-addiction centers, and improved law and order, the state takes firm steps against trafficking, militancy, and crime, while promoting socio-economic growth and tribal empowerment.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has reaffirmed his government’s strong stance against the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking, announcing a zero-tolerance policy inspired by the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Speaking at a public event in Dhalai district on Sunday, CM Saha underscored the state’s intensified efforts to combat the illicit drug trade that has increasingly used Tripura as a transit corridor.
The Chief Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth ₹42.46 crore during the event. While addressing the gathering, he emphasized the state’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and highlighted growing concerns over its social implications. “We have noticed that even young girls are becoming involved in the drug menace,” said CM Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare and Education portfolios. “There is a worrying rise in drug abuse through intravenous injection, which is directly contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDS in the state.”

To tackle the problem comprehensively, the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned ₹198 crore for the establishment of a specialized drug de-addiction center in Bishramganj, Sepahijala district. Additionally, the state government has resolved to set up similar drug de-addiction facilities in all eight districts of Tripura, with an allocation of ₹20 crore for each center.
In a notable achievement, the Chief Minister revealed that during the financial year 2024–25, the seizure of illegal drugs increased by 103%, while the destruction of confiscated drugs rose by 132%. These numbers are reflective of the government’s aggressive push toward eliminating the drug network and related criminal activities from the state.
CM Saha also touched on the broader security and law enforcement improvements in Tripura, asserting that the state is on the path to becoming militancy-free. He referenced the historic tripartite agreement signed in Delhi in 2023, which led to the surrender of several hundred militants from insurgent groups such as the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). “We are committed to fulfilling all promises made to the surrendered cadres as part of the peace process,” Saha assured.

Highlighting Tripura’s progress under the BJP-led government since 2018, the Chief Minister said the state has witnessed significant improvements in multiple socio-economic indicators. “Tripura ranks second in GDP among northeastern states, trailing only Assam, and also ranks second in per capita income after Sikkim,” he noted. He attributed this growth to the state’s untapped natural resources and rich environmental assets, which the government is determined to utilize sustainably for holistic development.
A strong focus on the empowerment of women, tribal welfare, and the sectors of education and healthcare remain key priorities for the current administration. The Chief Minister pointed out that proactive governance has also led to an improvement in the law and order situation in Tripura.

“Tripura is now the third-best state in India in maintaining law and order,” he declared. According to CM Saha, the crime rate in the state dropped by 19.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year. To bolster cyber security, a state-level Cyber Crime Police Station was recently inaugurated in Arundhutinagar, located on the outskirts of Agartala.
The Chief Minister’s statements underscore Tripura’s multi-pronged strategy in battling drug trafficking, strengthening internal security, and fostering sustainable development. The government’s zero-tolerance stance, coupled with infrastructural and social reforms, marks a determined push to secure a brighter, safer future for the people of Tripura.
