Former Chief Minister of Tripura and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar has voiced strong opposition to the Centre’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) proposal, claiming that it is an attempt to divert attention from the pressing issues affecting the daily lives of citizens. Speaking at a special party convention held at Agartala Town Hall on Wednesday, Sarkar described the move as dictatorial, saying it would undermine India’s parliamentary democracy and federal structure.
Sarkar criticized the BJP government at the Centre, arguing that the ONOE proposal poses a threat to the country’s democratic system and constitutional values. “By pushing for One Nation, One Election, the Prime Minister is diverting focus from burning issues like unemployment, inflation, and the declining economy,” he asserted.
He also took a critical stance on communal tensions in Tripura, alleging that the BJP is instigating violence in Muslim-majority areas to divert attention from these real problems. He accused the ruling party of using the politics of ‘Hindutva’ to target communities that did not support them in elections.
Additionally, Sarkar addressed the rising unemployment in Tripura, accusing the BJP-led state government of failing to generate jobs for local youths and instead hiring people from outside the state.
