Only recently an incident relating to the detention of the LGBT community people brought to fore the glaring absence of any knowledge among the police officials as well as some field reporters regarding the rights and related other matters of the community. Embarrassed at the publicity of the incident nationally the West Tripura District Police spared no time and to organize an awareness program on the Rights of LGBT Community on Tuesday in the West District Police Conference Hall at A. D. Nagar, Agartala.

A total of about 40 police officials of West Tripura District Police attended the programme. In-Charge SP (West) Amitabha Pal, Anirban Das, Addl. SP, Mina Romani Debbarma, Addl. SP also attended the programme. Prominent LGBT activists of Tripura including Sneha Gupta Roy, Amit Kumar Choudhury, Siddhartha Sankar Deb and Subhajit Datta attended the programme.

They shared problems faced by LGBT community. A detailed discussion about various aspects as mentioned in the landmark judgment (NALSA Vs Union of India & Others) delivered by the Supreme Court of India in the year 2014 on the Rights of LGBT community was made in the conference.
All the SDPOs and Officers-in-charge / representatives of all the Police Stations / Out Posts attended the programme. They got educated about various legal and human rights of LGBT community.
After discussion, a Question-Answer session was also organized in which clarification asked by SDPOs and OCs was answered by the LGBT activists, Subrata Chakraborty, AIGP (Crime) and Amitaba Pal, In Charge SP (West).
It is expected that the awareness programme will result in better understanding of the rights of the LGBT community.
