The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation is working on a war-footing to provide purified drinking water through pipeline to every family living in rural areas of the state by next December under Jal Jeevan Mission. Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Sushanta Chowdhury gave detailed information about the success and progress of the work so far in the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in the state in a press conference at the press conference hall of the Secretariat .

He said that the Jal Jeevan Mission project was launched in 2019. Out of a total of 7,41,945 households in rural areas of the state, so far 3,66,233 households have been provided drinking water through pipeline under the Jal Jeevan Mission. He said that 24,502 families in the rural areas of the state had been connected to piped drinking water before the Jal Jeevan Mission project was launched in the state. In percentage terms this rate was 3.30 percent. A total of 3,90,735 households have been supplied with purified drinking water through pipes so far, before and after the Jal Jeevan Mission project was launched in the state. In terms of percentage it is 52.66 percent.

In the press conference, Drinking Water and Sanitation minister, Sushanta Chowdhury said that there are a total of 8,710 villages in the rural areas of the state. So far, 100 percent of the houses have been provided drinking water through pipes in 1,238 villages. 90-100 percent drinking water has reached through pipeline in 610 villages. Besides 75-90 percent coverage has been achieved in 1,001 villages, 50-75 percent in 1,595 districts, 25-50 percent in 1,510 villages and up to 25 percent in 1,380 villages. He said that out of a total of 1,176 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees across the state, 29 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees have received 100 percent drinking water through pipeline. 62 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees have received 90-100 percent drinking water through pipeline, 87 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees have received 80-90 percent, 110 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees have received 70 to 80 percent. The drinking water and sanitation minister said that the work to provide drinking water connection through pipeline to the rest of the Gram panchayats and Village Committees is going on at a fast pace.

He said that so far 3,447 schools in rural areas of the state have been connected to drinking water through pipeline. In terms of percentage, this rate is 75.99. Apart from this, drinking water has been provided in 4,821 Anganwadi centres so far that is 53.97 coverage.

In the press conference, Minister also reviewed the district-wise implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission. He said that in order to further accelerate the work of Jal Jeevan Mission project in the state, the Ministry of Water Resources of the Union Government has recently given an additional grant of 166 crore rupees to the state for this sector. He expressed hope that every rural family in the state will be able to get drinking water through pipeline by next December. He sought everyone’s cooperation in this regard.

DWS secretary, Kiran kumar and Shyamlal Bhowmik, chief Engineer of the department were also present  at the press conference on 28th July, 2022.
