Japan’s Foreign Ministry has lodged a protest against China over the construction of a new structure in the East China Sea. The ministry confirmed that the structure is on China’s side of the median line dividing the two nations. Despite a 2008 agreement on joint gas field development, talks have since stalled, and China continues unilateral development.
Foreign Ministry’s head of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Kanai Masaaki, called the move extremely regrettable and urged China to resume negotiations. This marks the 21st such Chinese installation, following others confirmed in May and June. Japan accuses China of violating the spirit of the 2008 deal and escalating tensions in the resource-rich region.
