On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity – 2024, today, the Department of Human Physiology, the Department of Zoology and the Department of Botany jointly, in collaboration with Tripura Biodiversity Board (TBB) celebrated the day. The theme of this Day this year is “Be Part of Plan”. The environment and weather are continuously changing and we are stakeholders in our environment too. On account of modernization and urbanization in this high rate of population, we unconsciously or consciously are destroying different components of our environment and nature. So, we are suffering from different environmental issues, diseases and discomfort conditions, taking those into account, the three departments with TBB arranged one-day awareness on Biodiversity and removal of invasive alien species, plantation of saplings, and spot quiz on Biodiversity.
The programme is presided over by Dr. Subhajit Dinda, Senior Assistant Professor of GDC, Kamalpur. Dr. Lalawmkima Darlong, Assistant Professor and HOD, Dept. of Botany delivered the welcome address. Teachers Council Joint Secretary, Kelvin Uchai in his valuable speech explained the present environmental stress due to mankind in developing scenario of the state as well as of the country. Dr. C. Lalrinchhana, Assistant Professor and HOD, Dept. of Zoology, also gave a special speech in the context of the Removal of Invasive Allien Species and their bad effect on the environment as well as loss of local biodiversity.
The main moto of the awareness programme was to aware students and peoples to enhance biodiversity through actions like planting native plants in their landscaping, building bird and bat houses to serve as nesting places for nearby species, and choosing environmentally friendly options like recycling and purchasing locally grown food. Reducing or eradicating invasive species populations is the main objective of invasive species management. There has been little evaluation of the consistency between population-based (e.g., removing invaders) and broader goals (e.g., recovery of ecological systems) for invasive species management, even though management efforts are frequently driven by broader goals like reducing the detrimental effects of invasive species on ecosystems and society.
As many as 70 students were present in today’s awareness programme and 42 students from different science subjects participated in the quiz competition enthusiastically. Arup Malakar, a student of 2nd semester, Department of Human Physiology, presented a special speech on the importance of biodiversity, and the different ways of biodiversity conservation. Dr. Subhajit Dinda, in his presidential address enlightened about the importance of today’s awareness programme. Finally, Dr. C. Lalrinchhana, thanked all the students of GDC Kamalpur, all teaching faculty of the college to make the awareness cum Plantation Programme to a grand success.
