The Indian Army launches the Hornbill Motor Rally-2025 from Zakhama, promoting civil-military unity, adventure tourism, and cultural harmony across Nagaland. Covering 1,150 km, the rally precedes the iconic Hornbill Festival and strengthens engagement with local communities and youth.

The Indian Army, in partnership with a leading automobile company, launched the Hornbill Motor Rally-2025 from the Zakhama Military Station in Nagaland’s Kohima district on Thursday. The high-energy expedition marks the beginning of a seven-day adventure drive designed to enhance civil-military cooperation, promote cultural harmony, and showcase the resilience of the northeast.

According to a Defence spokesperson, the rally aims to reinforce peace, unity, and national integration, while reflecting the cultural vibrancy of Nagaland and the broader Northeastern region. The initiative also aligns with the spirit of the Hornbill Festival, an internationally acclaimed celebration of Naga heritage, tradition, and community strength.

The rally was officially flagged off by the General Officer Commanding, Red Shield Division, in the presence of senior Army officers, civil dignitaries, village leaders, and enthusiastic youth volunteers. Their collective presence underscored the strong partnership between the Indian Armed Forces and the people of Nagaland, symbolizing trust, teamwork, and shared pride.

Adventure Blended With Unity and Culture

The central theme of this year’s rally is “Harmonising Adventure with Peace – Celebrating the Spirit of Hornbill.” The tagline encapsulates the essence of courage, exploration, and cultural celebration that has long defined Nagaland’s identity. Drawing inspiration from the Hornbill Festival’s message of harmony and camaraderie, the rally emphasizes both adventure tourism and peaceful engagement.

A total of 35 personnel from the Indian Army and Assam Rifles are participating in the expedition, displaying strong camaraderie, discipline, and determination. Fourteen off-road vehicles, representing both the Army’s fleet and the collaborating automobile company, will undertake a journey of more than 1,150 kilometres across some of the most scenic yet challenging terrains of the Northeast.

Showcasing Nagaland’s Heritage Through the Rally Route

The rally is set to pass through iconic Naga villages including Zakhama, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Shamatore, Jessami, and Leimakhong, before eventually returning to Zakhama for the closing ceremony. These locations were carefully chosen to highlight the region’s rich culture, ethnic diversity, and natural beauty.

Along the route, participants will engage with retired Army veterans, school students, and local community groups. The itinerary includes visits to War Memorials, heritage villages, and significant cultural landmarks that pay tribute to the bravery and traditions of the Naga people. This interaction-driven approach ensures that the rally becomes more than an adventure—it becomes a cultural exchange and a tribute to shared histories.

Strengthening Civil-Military Relations and Eco-Tourism

The Defence spokesperson emphasized that the rally’s objectives extend beyond adventure. It aims to fortify civil-military relations, inspire young citizens, and promote eco-tourism in some of the most remote yet breathtaking corners of Nagaland.

By integrating community visits and cultural participation, the event encourages local youth to take part in constructive nation-building activities. It also highlights sustainable tourism opportunities that can boost the regional economy while preserving environmental and cultural heritage.

Hornbill Festival 2025 Set to Attract Global Attention

The rally comes just ahead of the 26th edition of Nagaland’s iconic Hornbill Festival, scheduled from December 1 to 10 at the picturesque Naga Heritage Village in Kisama. Often referred to as the “Festival of Festivals,” Hornbill attracts tourists from across India and around the world, offering a spectacular showcase of Naga performing arts, crafts, cuisines, and tribal traditions.

Earlier this week, Nagaland’s Minister for Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along, flagged off the Aerial Experience Rides – Helicopter Service at the Lerie Helipad in Kohima. The special helicopter rides are expected to add a fresh dimension to the Hornbill Festival, giving visitors a panoramic aerial view of Nagaland’s enchanting landscapes.

A Rally That Celebrates Identity and Integration

As the Hornbill Motor Rally-2025 navigates through mountains, valleys, and rich cultural territories, it stands as a powerful symbol of unity, adventure, and mutual respect. The collaborative effort between the Indian Army, local communities, and private partners highlights a shared commitment to peace, cultural preservation, and national pride.
