India and the United States are nearing completion of a durable bilateral trade agreement, with Marco Rubio confirming major progress during talks with S. Jaishankar. The proposed pact is expected to strengthen trade, supply chains, energy cooperation, defence ties, and long-term economic partnerships.

The United States and India are moving closer to finalising a major bilateral trade agreement that is expected to strengthen economic cooperation and deepen strategic ties between the two nations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the proposed pact would be “enduring,” “beneficial,” and aligned with the national interests of both countries.

Rubio made the remarks during a joint media interaction with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar after holding extensive discussions in India as part of his four-day official visit. The talks focused on expanding cooperation across several critical sectors, including trade, energy security, defence collaboration, critical minerals, technology development, and supply chain resilience.

The visit comes at an important stage in India-US relations, especially after months of trade-related disagreements involving tariffs and market access concerns. Despite these challenges, both governments have continued efforts to strengthen their broader strategic partnership and maintain economic engagement.

Rubio expressed confidence that negotiations between the two sides have reached an advanced stage. He stated that both nations have achieved significant progress in recent discussions and are now working toward finalising a sustainable agreement that will create long-term economic benefits.

According to Rubio, the proposed trade framework is designed not only to enhance bilateral trade but also to ensure fairness and balance in economic relations. He clarified that the concerns raised by Washington regarding trade imbalances are not directed solely at India but form part of a broader American strategy involving several trading partners worldwide.

He pointed out that India remains one of the United States’ most important economic partners and one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies. Rubio noted that rebalancing trade with a country of India’s size and economic scale naturally requires extensive negotiations and careful planning.

The discussions between the two countries also covered cooperation in combating terrorism, securing critical mineral supplies, and reducing dependence on vulnerable global supply chains. Both sides reportedly discussed expanding collaboration in emerging technologies and energy sectors as part of their long-term strategic vision.

Rubio further announced that an American trade delegation is expected to visit India soon to continue discussions and help conclude the agreement. The upcoming visit is being viewed as a key step toward finalising the deal after prolonged negotiations.

The proposed trade agreement is expected to improve market access for businesses in both countries while encouraging greater investments and industrial cooperation. Experts believe the pact could also help strengthen regional supply chains and support economic stability amid global uncertainties.

India and the United States have steadily expanded their partnership in recent years through cooperation in defence, technology, energy, and Indo-Pacific security initiatives. The ongoing trade negotiations are seen as another major milestone in the evolving relationship between the two democracies.

Observers say the successful completion of the agreement could open new opportunities for exporters, manufacturers, and investors while reinforcing the growing economic and geopolitical partnership between New Delhi and Washington.
