India and France deepen strategic partnership during high-level talks in Paris, focusing on defence, nuclear energy, AI, and global security. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri engages French leadership to expand bilateral cooperation amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
In a diplomatic engagement aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties, India and France held high-level Foreign Office Consultations in Paris on Monday, covering a wide spectrum of strategic, economic, and technological cooperation areas. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to deepen collaboration amid evolving global and regional challenges.
The Indian delegation was led by Vikram Misri, while the French side was represented by Martin Briens. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the consultations focused on critical sectors including defence, civil nuclear energy, space cooperation, cyber and digital domains, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
The talks also highlighted the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges and cultural connections, reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the two nations. Officials from both sides reviewed ongoing collaborations and explored new avenues to further enhance engagement across emerging sectors.
Following the consultations, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the dialogue encompassed a comprehensive review of bilateral relations alongside discussions on pressing global and regional developments.
Earlier in the day, Vikram Misri held a separate meeting with Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Their discussions centered on key areas of bilateral cooperation and major international concerns, particularly the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The meeting comes at a time when the global security landscape remains volatile, especially following unsuccessful negotiations between the United States and Iran. Both India and France underscored the importance of maintaining stability in the region through diplomatic efforts.
According to a statement from the French Foreign Ministry, both sides emphasized adherence to ceasefire agreements and the urgent need to pursue a peaceful and lasting resolution to ongoing conflicts. The leaders also deliberated on restoring freedom of navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global energy supplies.
In addition to security concerns, discussions extended to global economic challenges. India and France, working in coordination with the G7 framework, explored strategies to address macroeconomic imbalances and promote a more inclusive multilateral order. The dialogue reflects a shared vision to strengthen global governance mechanisms and ensure sustainable economic growth.
During his visit, Misri also engaged in cultural diplomacy by visiting the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Paris. He attended the exhibition titled “L’Art de L’Inde: Aujourd’hui,” which showcases contemporary Indian art through 80 works by 40 artists. The exhibition highlights India’s rich and evolving artistic traditions, further strengthening cultural ties between the two nations.
The Paris consultations form part of a broader diplomatic tour by the Indian Foreign Secretary. Following his engagements in France, Misri is scheduled to visit Germany, where he will co-chair similar consultations with Geza Andreas von Geyr.
The visit gains additional significance in the context of recent high-level exchanges between India and Europe, including visits by Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz to India earlier this year. These engagements underline the growing importance of India-Europe relations in shaping global strategic and economic frameworks.
