Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across Tripura till July 16, the IMD has warned. Multiple weather systems may trigger flooding, waterlogging, landslides and traffic disruption, prompting authorities to remain on alert and strengthen disaster preparedness across vulnerable districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Tripura till July 16, warning of possible flooding, waterlogging, landslides, traffic disruption and damage to infrastructure as multiple weather systems remain active over Bangladesh and the adjoining Bay of Bengal.
According to the latest weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre, Agartala at 12.30 pm on Monday, isolated places in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 20 cm till 8.30 am on Tuesday. Other districts of the state are also expected to experience heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm during the same period.
The IMD further stated that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in West, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura districts from July 14 to July 17. Khowai district is also expected to receive heavy showers on July 14 and 15 as the weather systems remain favourable for widespread rainfall activity across the state.
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to a combination of active monsoon systems. These include the monsoon trough extending from northwestern India to Manipur, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Bangladesh, another cyclonic circulation over east Bangladesh, and a trough stretching from northwest Bihar to Manipur through east Bangladesh and Tripura.
The IMD said these weather systems are expected to enhance moisture incursion over the northeastern region, leading to widespread rainfall and isolated spells of very heavy precipitation over Tripura in the coming days.
The state has already witnessed significant rainfall over the past 24 hours. According to the IMD, the highest rainfall was recorded at the District Magistrate’s Office in West Tripura, which received 138 mm of rain during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Monday. Bishramganj in Sepahijala district recorded 116 mm, while KVK-South received 85 mm. Amarpur in Gomati district registered 61.3 mm of rainfall during the same period.
With rainfall expected to intensify further, the IMD has cautioned that low-lying areas may experience flooding and prolonged waterlogging. Authorities have also been warned about the possibility of temporary road closures, disruption of vehicular movement, landslides in vulnerable locations, damage to public infrastructure and standing crops, as well as power supply interruptions.
The weather office has advised district administrations and disaster management authorities to remain fully prepared to respond to any emergency arising from the adverse weather conditions. It recommended that emergency response teams remain on alert, vulnerable landslide-prone areas be monitored continuously, road clearance operations be kept ready, and evacuation advisories be issued whenever required.
The IMD has also suggested setting up temporary shelters in vulnerable locations to ensure the safety of residents if weather conditions deteriorate further. Citizens have been urged to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and closely follow weather updates and official advisories issued by the authorities.
