IMD Agartala wins the Best Meteorological Centre Award 2025 at IMD’s 151st Foundation Day in New Delhi, recognizing excellence in weather forecasting, disaster risk reduction, public safety services, and coordination with Tripura’s disaster management authorities.
The Meteorological Centre, Agartala, has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Best Meteorological Centre’ award among all centres under the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the year 2025, marking a significant achievement for Tripura in the field of weather science and disaster management.
The award was presented by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Earth Sciences, during a special ceremony held at Mausam Bhavan, New Delhi, to commemorate the 151st Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department. The recognition highlights the centre’s outstanding performance, innovation, and commitment to public service.
According to an official press release, the Meteorological Centre, Agartala, has consistently demonstrated excellence in providing accurate weather forecasts, early warnings, and meteorological support, particularly in a region vulnerable to floods, cyclones, and extreme weather events. Its efforts have played a crucial role in disaster risk reduction, public safety, and informed decision-making by government agencies and the general public.
As part of the 151st Foundation Day celebrations, the Meteorological Centre, Agartala, also organized an Open House Programme at its premises. The event was inaugurated with a welcome address by Dr. Partha Roy, Head of the Meteorological Centre, Agartala. He highlighted IMD’s 151-year-long service to the nation and emphasized the growing importance of scientific weather services in mitigating the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.
The Open House Programme aimed to enhance public awareness about IMD’s various services, technological advancements, and community outreach initiatives. It provided an interactive platform where citizens, officials, and stakeholders could directly engage with meteorologists, seek clarifications, and offer feedback.
Officers and staff from the State Disaster Management Authority and District Disaster Management authorities of the Government of Tripura, along with representatives from other concerned departments, actively participated in the programme. Their interaction and suggestions were instrumental in strengthening coordination between IMD and state agencies, ensuring improved preparedness and response mechanisms.
