IGM Hospital Triumphs Over Deadly Tetanus in Remarkable Recovery

In a remarkable medical victory, Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital has successfully treated a severe case of tetanus, saving the life of 35-year-old Bikas Debbarma, a resident of Khowai with roots in Shikaribari, Champahaor. The patient’s recovery marks a significant achievement for the hospital’s dedicated medical team, showcasing their expertise and coordinated efforts in combating one of the most excruciating and life-threatening bacterial infections known to medicine, said Dr Kanak Chouwdhury in a Facebook status where he also shared the smiling picture of the patient Bikash Debbarma on discharge.

Tetanus, often referred to as “lockjaw” or colloquially in Bengali as Dhanushtankar, is a bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani. Historically, this disease has claimed countless lives, leaving its victims in agonizing pain as their bodies contort into rigid, bow-like shapes due to severe muscle spasms. The infection, which thrives in contaminated wounds, triggers symptoms so intense that patients suffer immensely, with no reliable count of the lives it has claimed over the centuries.

Bikas Debbarma’s ordeal began earlier this month when he was admitted to Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) on May 12, 2025, with symptoms suggestive of tetanus. Recognizing the severity of his condition, AGMC promptly referred him to IGM Hospital for specialized care. Upon arrival at IGM’s Critical Disease Control (CDC) unit, Bikas presented with alarming symptoms: trismus (lockjaw), opisthotonos (severe arching of the back due to muscle spasms), and significant respiratory distress. These hallmarks of tetanus underscored the urgency of his condition, demanding immediate and comprehensive medical intervention.

The medical team at IGM Hospital sprang into action, mobilizing a multidisciplinary approach to tackle the life-threatening infection. Specialists from the medicine department, physiotherapy unit, and nursing staff collaborated seamlessly to provide round-the-clock care. Tetanus treatment requires swift and coordinated efforts, as delays or inadequate management can prove fatal. The team administered critical medications to neutralize the tetanus toxin, managed muscle spasms, and supported Bikas’s breathing to stabilize his condition. Physiotherapy played a pivotal role in alleviating the severe muscle rigidity that threatened his mobility and comfort.

For nearly two weeks, Bikas’s recovery was a battle against the relentless Clostridium tetani bacterium. The medical team’s persistence paid off, as they gradually turned the tide in his favor. Through meticulous care, including medications to counteract the toxin, muscle relaxants, and intensive physiotherapy, Bikas began to show signs of improvement. The hospital’s CDC unit, equipped to handle critical cases, proved instrumental in ensuring that every aspect of his treatment was addressed with precision and care.

On Thursday, after his final physiotherapy session, IGM Hospital authorities discharged Bikas Debbarma, marking a triumphant end to his harrowing journey. His recovery is not just a personal victory but a testament to the hospital’s commitment to excellence in patient care. The successful outcome highlights the importance of rapid diagnosis, specialized treatment, and a collaborative medical approach in overcoming a disease as formidable as tetanus.

Tetanus remains a rare but deadly condition in modern times, largely preventable through vaccination and proper wound care. However, in regions where access to healthcare or immunization may be limited, cases like Bikas’s serve as a stark reminder of the disease’s devastating potential. IGM Hospital’s success in this case underscores the critical role of advanced medical facilities and skilled healthcare professionals in saving lives against the odds.

As Bikas returns to his life in Khowai, his recovery stands as a beacon of hope and a powerful example of human resilience and medical expertise triumphing over adversity. The staff at IGM Hospital, from doctors to nurses to physiotherapists, have demonstrated that even the most severe illnesses can be overcome with dedication, teamwork, and unwavering care.

This victory over tetanus is not just a medical milestone but a story of survival that will inspire the community and healthcare professionals alike. IGM Hospital continues to serve as a cornerstone of healthcare in Tripura, proving once again that with the right resources and resolve, even the deadliest diseases can be defeated.
