The Ministry of Health has approved a ₹23.75 crore, 50-bedded Critical Care Block for Dhalai District Hospital under PM-ABHIM, boosting emergency healthcare access in Tripura’s tribal region and reducing referrals to Agartala.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has approved a 50-bedded Critical Care Block for Dhalai District Hospital in Tripura. The facility has been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri–Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) and is estimated to cost ₹23.75 crore.

The approval marks a major milestone for the healthcare system in Dhalai, one of Tripura’s predominantly tribal and geographically challenging districts. Until now, critically ill patients from the region were often referred to Agartala due to the lack of advanced medical facilities locally. The new Critical Care Block is expected to drastically reduce referral delays and improve survival rates during medical emergencies.

According to officials, the upcoming facility will be equipped to handle trauma cases, cardiac emergencies, severe infections, respiratory distress, and other life-threatening conditions. The block will include advanced intensive care units, modern life-support systems, emergency diagnostic facilities, and trained medical personnel to ensure round-the-clock critical care services.

The initiative reflects the broader objectives of PM-ABHIM, which aims to develop robust public health infrastructure at district and block levels across the country. By focusing on critical care capacity, the mission seeks to enhance India’s preparedness for health emergencies while improving access to quality medical treatment in underserved and remote regions.

Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha, expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda for approving the project. He described the sanction as a testament to the central government’s commitment to equitable healthcare development and inclusive growth. The Chief Minister emphasized that strengthening district hospitals is essential to bridging the healthcare gap between urban centers and rural or tribal areas.

Health experts believe the new Critical Care Block will play a crucial role in saving lives, particularly during the “golden hour” following accidents or acute medical episodes. By providing advanced treatment closer to home, patients will no longer face long travel times that often worsen their condition.

Local residents, community leaders, and healthcare professionals have welcomed the decision, calling it a transformative step for the district. Many have noted that improved healthcare access will not only enhance public health outcomes but also boost confidence in government healthcare institutions.

Once operational, the facility is expected to reduce pressure on tertiary hospitals in Agartala and strengthen the overall referral network in Tripura. The project also aligns with the government’s long-term vision of building resilient, people-centric healthcare systems that leave no region behind.
