Tensions rise in the Gulf of Oman after Iran seized an oil tanker and accused the United States of attacking vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of renewed regional conflict and disruption to global oil trade routes.

Rising military tensions in the Gulf of Oman have triggered fresh concerns over maritime security and global oil supply routes after Iran announced the seizure of an “offending” oil tanker while the United States confirmed disabling two separate vessels accused of violating sanctions restrictions.

According to a statement released Friday by the Iranian army, naval forces intercepted an oil tanker identified as “Ocean Koi,” accusing the vessel of attempting to disrupt Iran’s oil exports and harm the country’s national interests. Iranian officials alleged that the tanker was carrying Iranian oil and was involved in what Tehran described as a “special operation” designed to exploit regional instability in the Gulf of Oman.

Iranian naval units reportedly redirected the tanker toward the country’s southern coastline before transferring control of the vessel to judicial authorities for further investigation. The incident marks another escalation in the long-running maritime dispute involving Iranian oil shipments, sanctions enforcement, and strategic control over Gulf shipping lanes.

In a separate military statement, Iran claimed that its naval forces confronted US destroyers operating near the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran alleged that cruise missiles, rockets, and combat drones were launched in response to attacks on Iranian oil tankers in territorial waters and near the strategic waterway. Iranian authorities stated that the US destroyers eventually altered course and withdrew from the contested area.

The United States Central Command later confirmed military action against two tankers identified as M/T Sea Star III and M/T Sevda. According to the US statement, American forces disabled both vessels on May 8 before they could enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. Washington claimed the ships were operating in violation of an ongoing US blockade.

US officials said a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet launched from the USS George H.W. Bush carried out precision strikes targeting the smokestacks of both vessels. The operation reportedly prevented the tankers from continuing toward Iranian territory while avoiding broader structural destruction.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the US operation, calling it a violation of the April 8 ceasefire agreement between the opposing sides. Tehran accused Washington of increasing regional instability through military escalation and aggressive maritime operations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi criticized the United States for pursuing what he described as a “reckless military adventure” despite the possibility of renewed diplomatic engagement. Posting on the social media platform X, Araghchi declared that Iran would not surrender to pressure and insisted diplomacy remained the only path toward resolving tensions.

The Iranian government also claimed that the United States carried out coordinated airstrikes on southern Iranian cities and the capital, Tehran, with support from unnamed regional partners. Iranian officials further asserted that the country’s missile stockpile and launcher capacity now exceed previous estimates made by US intelligence agencies.

Despite the escalating rhetoric, Washington stated that it does not seek a wider conflict and maintained that the April ceasefire agreement remains in effect. However, the latest incidents near the Strait of Hormuz have intensified fears of renewed instability in one of the world’s most strategically important oil transit corridors.

Energy analysts warn that continued confrontation between Iran and the United States could threaten international shipping operations and create fresh volatility in global oil markets already strained by ongoing geopolitical tensions across the Middle East.
