Government Railway Police (GRP) in Agartala arrested a Bangladeshi national and his Indian accomplice for illegal border entry. The duo was caught near Agartala Railway Station, sparking a deeper probe into possible cross-border infiltration networks.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Sunday afternoon apprehended a Bangladeshi national and his Indian associate from Agartala Railway Station for their alleged involvement in illegal border crossing through the South Tripura frontier. The arrests, made on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, have raised concerns about ongoing cross-border infiltration activities in the region.

According to official sources, the Bangladeshi national has been identified as Mohammad Selim (37), son of Abul Kalam, a resident of Modhyam Rangamatia, Battala Post Office, Porsuram Police Station area under Feni district of Bangladesh. His Indian aide, Mohammad Ripon Ali Laskar (26), son of Mantu Ali Laskar, hails from Bazemara under Katlicherra area in Hailakandi district of Assam.

The duo was intercepted by GRP personnel near the main gate of Agartala Railway Station around 3:30 pm, following credible intelligence that suggested movement of illegal entrants in the vicinity. Upon questioning, both men reportedly admitted that Selim had crossed into Indian territory without valid travel documents, using an unauthorized route along the South Tripura border. Laskar allegedly acted as his facilitator, guiding him through the porous sections of the Indo-Bangladesh frontier.

Case Registered Under Multiple Acts

Following their arrest, the GRP registered a case under Case No. 2025GRP108, invoking stringent sections of multiple laws. The charges include Sections 61(2), 249(b), and 143(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, alongside Sections 14(A)(b) and 14(C) of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and Section 3 of the Passport (Entry into India) Amendment Act, 2000.

Authorities confirmed that both the accused are currently under police custody and are being interrogated to uncover details of their route, network, and possible links to cross-border syndicates involved in human trafficking or illegal migration.

Focus on Cross-Border Infiltration Network

A senior GRP officer said, “We received intelligence that a Bangladeshi national had recently entered Tripura through an unauthorized border route. Our team immediately swung into action and detained two suspects matching the description at Agartala Railway Station. Further interrogation revealed that they were planning to travel to Assam.”

Investigators are now exploring whether the duo is connected to a broader organized network facilitating illegal entry and transportation of Bangladeshi nationals into various parts of India. Given Tripura’s geographical proximity to Bangladesh, the state’s southern and western border regions are often exploited for such clandestine movements.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh, a large portion of which remains vulnerable despite increased fencing and surveillance. Security agencies have been on heightened alert in recent months following reports of illegal crossings, smuggling of contraband, and human trafficking activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Heightened Vigilance Across Border Points

The incident has once again highlighted the persistent challenges of border security management in the northeastern region. The GRP has intensified surveillance at key railway stations, especially in Agartala, Dharmanagar, and Udaipur, which are often used as transit points by touts and illegal entrants aiming to reach deeper into Indian territory.

Officials have also coordinated with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police’s intelligence wing to identify possible routes used by infiltrators. Preliminary reports indicate that the illegal passage through South Tripura’s Sabroom and Belonia sectors continues to be a preferred infiltration corridor due to dense vegetation and gaps in fencing.

Ongoing Investigation

Both the accused are expected to be produced before a local court after the completion of preliminary interrogation. Police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests in the coming days as part of the ongoing investigation into cross-border infiltration networks.

Authorities have urged local residents in border areas to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious movements to the nearest police or BSF outposts.

The arrests underscore the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies to tighten border security and dismantle networks that threaten national integrity and internal security.
