In response to the escalating demand for milk in Tripura, particularly within the Micro Small and Medium Entrepreneur (MSME) sector, private establishments are increasingly associating themselves with milk-based production and marketing in the state. While the animal research development department underscores the significance of government initiatives, the shortage of funds poses a challenge for small-scale cow rearing activities aimed at enhancing milk production.
Despite successful implementation in other states, Tripura lacks a dedicated scheme akin to the ‘Kamdhenu Dairy Scheme’ to support farmers and entrepreneurs in the dairy sector. Experts emphasize the need to introduce such schemes to not only boost milk production but also elevate the income of local farmers. To address the funding gap, there is a suggestion to tap into the resources available from the North Eastern Council, serving as the nodal agency for economic and social development in the region.
One proposed solution involves developing a robust marketing system by establishing private enterprises with government support. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) could play a pivotal role in supporting the creation of ‘Rural Marts’ in government offices and tourist hotspots. This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility of milk products to a wider audience.
The success of Minimum Support Price (MSP) in paddy procurement by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Tripura has inspired calls for a similar approach in the dairy sector. Advocates argue that implementing MSP for milk could ensure a steady supply of high-quality milk to hospitals and military camps, aligning with the government’s commitment to providing genuine dairy products.
While acknowledging the positive initiatives taken by the government, Kiran Bhowmik, a PhD Scholar in the Economics Department at Tripura University, underscores the importance of effective monitoring and efficient fund allocation to ensure the success of these endeavors. With the state’s economy deeply rooted in agriculture and animal resource-related activities, a well-coordinated effort is essential to elevate Tripura’s position in the dairy industry and boost the income of local farmers.
