Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi slammed Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma as a “flop leader,” accusing the BJP government of broken promises, land grabs, cronyism, and police brutality against indigenous groups, while urging voters to reject BJP’s false assurances in upcoming elections.
In a sharp political offensive ahead of the upcoming elections, Lok Sabha MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi launched a blistering attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, branding him a “flop CM” who has failed to deliver on his promises despite being in power for several years.
Speaking at an election rally held at Panbari Higher Secondary School playground in the Manah Serfang constituency of Chirang district on Thursday, Gogoi recalled Sarma’s earlier aspirations of positioning Assam among the top five states of India. However, he said, the reality under Sarma’s leadership was completely different.
“Instead of being in the top five, Assam today ranks among the bottom five states. When education and health were under his charge, both sectors suffered severe setbacks. His record as a leader speaks volumes about his failures,” Gogoi told the crowd.
The Congress leader accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of betraying the trust of indigenous communities by not fulfilling its pledge to provide land rights. “The BJP promised to distribute land pattas, but instead they grabbed land in the name of their families. They floated companies under their sons’ names, shut down local industries, and handed over 40,000 bighas of Assam’s land to corporate houses,” he alleged.
Gogoi further criticized Sarma’s governance model, describing it as one rooted in cronyism, nepotism, and broken promises. He claimed that the government had failed to address critical issues such as unemployment, poverty, and rising costs of living, while indulging in populist rhetoric to distract the public.
“The BJP thrives on making tall claims, but the ground reality is one of frustration and suffering. The youth are disillusioned, industries are closing, and people are struggling with inflation. This government has failed on every front,” Gogoi asserted.
He also raised concerns over the treatment of indigenous groups, particularly referencing a recent incident in Dhubri district’s Golokganj area. Members of the Koch Rajbongshi community, who had been peacefully demonstrating for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and the creation of a separate Kamatapur state, faced police action during their protest.
“The brutal lathi-charge on peaceful protesters was barbaric and unacceptable. It shows this government’s indifference to the grievances of indigenous people and youth. Instead of listening, they chose suppression,” Gogoi said.
The Congress MP urged voters in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) to recognize what he described as the BJP’s track record of “false promises” and “anti-people policies.” He emphasized that only a Congress-led government could protect the rights, dignity, and future of Assam’s diverse communities.
“This election is about safeguarding Assam’s future, its indigenous identity, and its economic well-being. We must see through the BJP’s propaganda and choose a leadership that works for the people, not for corporate interests,” Gogoi declared, receiving loud cheers from the crowd.
Gaurav Gogoi’s strong remarks are the latest in a series of verbal duels between the Congress and the BJP in Assam as both parties prepare for a high-stakes political contest. The attack signals the Congress’s attempt to consolidate support in the BTR and other regions where indigenous rights and land ownership issues remain politically sensitive.

While Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has often projected himself as a transformative leader steering Assam towards progress, the opposition has consistently accused him of neglecting core issues such as unemployment, healthcare, education, and protection of tribal rights.
As Assam gears up for the upcoming polls, Gogoi’s fiery speech has added new intensity to the political battlefield, sharpening the opposition’s narrative of governance failures under the BJP regime.
