FWICE urges Indian film producers to boycott Turkey as a shooting location, citing its support for Pakistan and opposition to India’s national interests. The film body emphasizes that national dignity and sovereignty must come before international collaborations.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has strongly urged Indian film producers to refrain from selecting Turkey as a filming location, citing the country’s increasing political support for Pakistan. In a statement released recently, the apex body representing 36 different crafts of technicians, workers, and artists in the Indian entertainment industry stressed that national interest must come first.

The move follows Turkey and Azerbaijan’s official backing of Pakistan, including recent remarks condemning India’s Operation Sindoor. On May 8, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry labeled the operation a “provocative act,” sparking public outrage across India. The statements triggered sharp criticism from Indian citizens and public figures, including actress Rupali Ganguly, who joined online calls for a cultural and commercial boycott of Turkey.

“FWICE has always stood firm in its belief that ‘Nation Comes First,’” read the film body’s statement. “In view of recent developments and Turkey’s consistent positioning in support of Pakistan, which has raised concerns regarding national integrity and security, we believe it is not in the best interests of the Indian film industry to invest or collaborate in any form that could indirectly support or benefit such a nation.”

FWICE emphasized the broader implications of continuing to collaborate with countries that are perceived as hostile to India’s interests. “Turkey’s stance has been observed not just diplomatically but also in various international forums, where it has taken positions contrary to India’s sovereign interests,” the statement continued.

“As an industry deeply rooted in Indian soil and culture, we cannot remain indifferent to actions that undermine our nation’s dignity or security. We therefore appeal to all production houses, line producers, actors, directors, and crew members across the Indian film fraternity to stand in solidarity with the nation and boycott Turkey as a location for film shoots until such time that the country revisits its diplomatic stance and aligns with principles of mutual respect and non-interference.”

FWICE further reiterated that their appeal is not merely symbolic but a strong call to action. “Our unity during such times is vital to send a strong, collective message: India’s sovereignty and dignity are non-negotiable. We remain hopeful that the Indian film community will respect this appeal in the larger national interest,” the statement concluded.

This development places added pressure on Indian producers who have previously favored Turkey for its scenic locations and production-friendly infrastructure. As calls to boycott grow louder, the Indian film industry may need to explore new destinations that align with the country’s diplomatic priorities.
