ECB CEO Richard Gould said Brendon McCullum’s removal as England Test head coach was a results-based decision after poor Test performances. McCullum will continue leading England’s white-ball teams, while the ECB confirmed Rob Key will remain as managing director.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that Brendon McCullum will step down as England’s men’s Test head coach after the board invoked the notice period in his contract. ECB Chief Executive Officer Richard Gould stated that the decision was based entirely on England’s recent Test results, following a disappointing run in which the team lost seven of its last nine matches.
Despite leaving the Test role, McCullum will continue as the head coach of England’s white-ball teams. Gould praised McCullum’s contribution over the past four years, describing his tenure as memorable while emphasizing that performance remains the key factor behind major decisions.

The ECB also defended its earlier decision to retain McCullum after the Ashes defeat, saying the coaching staff deserved time to improve results. Gould further confirmed that England men’s managing director Rob Key will remain in his position, dismissing speculation over his future.
