Two days after an 18-year-old youth fell into Dumboor reservoir, his body remains missing despite continuous search operations by locals, fire services, and NDRF teams, leaving the family and community in deep distress and mourning.
The anxious wait continues for the family of an 18-year-old youth who went missing in the Dumboor reservoir, as search operations entered the second day without success. Despite sustained efforts by local residents, fire service personnel, and disaster response teams, the body of Dharmajit Chakma remains untraced, deepening the grief and uncertainty gripping the region.
Dharmajit Chakma, a resident of Bhakta Para near Narikelkunja in the Gandacherra subdivision, reportedly fell into the reservoir on Sunday evening while returning home by boat with his grandfather. The duo had been to a nearby market to sell ber, commonly known as jujube fruit, when the tragic incident occurred during their return journey.
According to eyewitnesses, Dharmajit suddenly lost his balance while the boat was moving across the reservoir. Within seconds, he slipped into the deep waters and disappeared beneath the surface before anyone could react. His grandfather raised an alarm, prompting nearby villagers to rush to the scene in an attempt to rescue the youth.
The incident triggered panic across Narikelkunja and nearby areas, with residents immediately launching a search using locally available boats and equipment. The Gandacherra Fire Service Department was informed soon after, and firefighters arrived at the site to assist in the rescue operation. The team continued searching until late Sunday night but failed to locate the missing youth.
Search operations resumed early Monday morning, with intensified efforts covering multiple sections of the reservoir. However, challenging water conditions, limited visibility, and the depth of the reservoir severely hampered progress. By Monday evening, the body had still not been recovered.
At around 6:30 pm on Monday, a specialized team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived at Narikelkunja to reinforce the ongoing operation. Equipped with advanced rescue tools and trained divers, the NDRF team began a systematic search, raising hopes among the family and villagers that the body might soon be recovered.
As of the time of filing this report, despite the involvement of the NDRF, Dharmajit Chakma’s body remains missing. The prolonged delay has intensified the anguish of his family, who have been stationed near the reservoir since the incident, anxiously awaiting news.
