Dengue cases surge to 46 in Unakoti district, prompting health officials to urge caution. Medical experts emphasize preventive measures, awareness campaigns, and early testing to control the mosquito-borne outbreak before it escalates further across the region.

Unakoti district is witnessing a worrying increase in dengue infections, with health authorities confirming 46 positive cases so far. The sudden spike has sparked concern among local residents and the health department, which is now stepping up efforts to control the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

According to official data, 13 patients are currently undergoing treatment at the Unakoti District Hospital, though none are reported to be in critical condition. The remaining cases are being managed through home isolation and local healthcare facilities.

Dr. Rohan Pal, Medical Superintendent of Unakoti District Hospital, said the recent surge marks a sharp increase compared to previous months. “We conduct dengue testing throughout the year, but the past few weeks have seen a noticeable rise in positive cases. Fortunately, none of the patients are in serious condition,” he told reporters on Thursday.

Public Advised to Avoid Self-Medication

Dr. Pal warned residents against self-medicating for fever without proper medical consultation. “Many people with mild fever or flu-like symptoms are taking over-the-counter drugs without diagnosis. This can mask the symptoms but does not treat the underlying disease,” he explained.

He strongly advised anyone experiencing fever, body aches, or rashes to visit the nearest hospital or primary health center for a free dengue test. “Early detection is crucial for proper treatment and for preventing complications,” Dr. Pal added.

Focus on Cleanliness and Vector Control

Health authorities have renewed their appeal to the public to maintain clean surroundings and take preventive steps to stop mosquito breeding. “People should regularly check and empty containers that may collect water, use mosquito nets, and apply repellents, especially during morning and evening hours,” Dr. Pal advised.

Officials noted that the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, breeds in stagnant water found in household items such as buckets, flower pots, and discarded tires. “Community participation is vital. We cannot fight dengue without collective action,” said a senior health official from the district surveillance team.

Health Department Intensifies Monitoring and Awareness Drives

In response to the rising cases, the District Health Department has increased field surveillance and larval control measures. Teams have been deployed to identify mosquito breeding hotspots and conduct fogging operations in affected areas.

Public health workers have also started door-to-door awareness campaigns, distributing leaflets and conducting educational sessions on dengue prevention. The campaigns emphasize that clean water does not mean safe water—any stagnant water can become a mosquito breeding ground.

“We are monitoring the situation closely,” an official statement from the district health authority read. “Our immediate goal is to prevent further spread and ensure the public remains informed and vigilant.”

Community Urged to Stay Alert but Not Panic

Despite the spike, doctors have reassured the public that the situation remains under control. There have been no reports of severe dengue or fatalities in Unakoti district this season.

“Panic helps no one,” said Dr. Pal. “With awareness, early testing, and community cooperation, we can easily contain this outbreak.” He reiterated that the health department provides dengue testing and treatment free of cost, urging residents to take full advantage of available services.

Regional Context and Seasonal Patterns

Health experts point out that dengue cases often rise during the post-monsoon season, when water stagnation increases across both rural and urban areas. Similar trends have been observed across Tripura and neighboring districts.

Meteorological conditions such as humidity and temperature fluctuations create an ideal environment for mosquito breeding. As such, experts emphasize that preventive steps taken now will be critical to avoiding a larger outbreak in the coming weeks.

Final Appeal from Health Officials

Concluding their message, health authorities have issued a district-wide appeal urging residents to remain alert, avoid self-medication, and cooperate with health workers.

“Let’s act before it’s too late,” said Dr. Pal. “Clean your surroundings, use mosquito protection, and visit a hospital at the first sign of fever. Together, we can stop dengue from spreading further in Unakoti.”
