CPM Anti-National, Says Biplab Deb For Opposing Anti-Naxal Operations
Former Tripura Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday issued a strong condemnation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), accusing the Left party of consistently siding with anti-national elements. His remarks came in response to CPI(M)’s criticism of a recent security operation in Chhattisgarh, during which 27 Maoists, including their General Secretary Nambala Kesavarao, were killed in an armed encounter.

In a video message released to the public, Deb—currently the Member of Parliament from Tripura West—called out the CPI(M) for what he described as its habitual opposition to state action against violent and unlawful groups. “The CPI(M) has once again exposed its true colours by questioning a decisive operation carried out by our brave security forces against Maoist insurgents,” Deb said. “This is not the first time the party has played a negative role when the government takes a strong stand against those who threaten the unity and peace of the nation.”
Condemning Support for Naxals
Referring to the slain Maoist leader Nambala Kesavarao—also known by his alias Basavaraj—as a top insurgent figure responsible for years of violence and terror, Deb warned citizens to see through what he termed the “double standards” of the CPI(M). “The party’s stand reveals its support for Naxals who have taken countless innocent lives—be it civilians, political workers, or members of the armed forces—and have continuously obstructed development efforts, particularly in tribal and rural areas,” he stated.
Deb further accused the CPI(M) of having a long history of undermining national interest. “This is the same party that, during ‘Operation Sindoor’, organised rallies in West Bengal showing support for Pakistan. It has, time and again, spoken in favour of China and Pakistan while adopting an anti-India tone. Such a party has forfeited its right to approach the people as a legitimate political entity.”
BJP Urges Isolation of CPI(M)
Echoing the sentiment of the larger BJP organisation, Deb urged the public to socially and politically “isolate” the CPI(M), describing its stance as not just anti-national but also anti-people. “This is a party that chooses to stand with extremists rather than the security forces and common citizens who seek peace and development,” he asserted.
CPI(M) Stands by Its Statement, Calls for Dialogue
The CPI(M), meanwhile, maintained its position through an official statement issued by the politburo on Thursday. The party condemned the encounter in Chhattisgarh and criticized both the central government and the BJP-led state government for, in their view, refusing to explore peaceful solutions.
“In spite of our political opposition to Maoist ideology and methods, we believe the government’s approach should have involved serious efforts at dialogue,” the statement read. “The Maoists had repeatedly expressed their willingness to engage in talks, but their overtures were ignored. Several political parties and civil society groups have appealed for negotiations, which the government has failed to heed.”
The CPI(M) called on the government to immediately cease paramilitary operations and pursue a dialogue-based resolution to the Maoist insurgency.

Broader Political Implications
The exchange between the BJP and CPI(M) highlights the continued political divide over how to address India’s long-standing Maoist insurgency, particularly in regions like Chhattisgarh, where the conflict has taken a heavy human and developmental toll. While the BJP emphasizes a security-first approach to end what it views as domestic terrorism, the Left continues to advocate for political dialogue—even with those it ideologically opposes.
The debate also comes at a time when political rhetoric around nationalism and internal security remains a dominant theme in national discourse, especially in the lead-up to elections.
