CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury says the party will campaign on democracy, citizen services and accountable governance in Tripura’s upcoming municipal elections, highlighting urban infrastructure, civic facilities and transparency in administration.

CPI(M) State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said the party will place democracy, citizen services and accountable governance at the centre of its campaign for the upcoming municipal elections in Tripura.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Chaudhury said the CPI(M) would seek to unite citizens around issues related to democratic governance, civic services and administrative accountability. He said the party’s campaign would focus on restoring public confidence in the functioning of urban local bodies and ensuring that municipal administration remains transparent and responsive to citizens.

Chaudhury said detailed discussions on the municipal elections had been delayed because of the recently held Village Committee elections. However, he stated that once the political situation becomes clearer, the party would begin preparations in an organised and united manner.

Speaking about urban infrastructure, Chaudhury said the development of cities should not be assessed only through roads, water supply and electricity. According to him, the social and cultural life of urban areas is also an important part of overall development.

He alleged that the urban environment in Tripura had deteriorated over the past eight and a half years. Chaudhury claimed that despite expenditure being reported on civic infrastructure, several roads, drainage systems and other basic facilities in Agartala and other towns continue to face problems.

He particularly referred to waterlogging, alleging that several areas experience significant difficulties even following light rainfall. The CPI(M) leader said improvements in drainage and other municipal services would therefore remain important issues during the party’s election campaign.

Chaudhury also raised allegations concerning political, social and law-and-order conditions in the state. He claimed that ordinary citizens face pressure during various everyday transactions, including land-related activities and house repairs. He further alleged that commissions are being demanded in connection with construction materials such as bricks and cement.

These allegations were presented by Chaudhury as part of his criticism of the existing system of governance. The ruling side’s response to the specific allegations was not included in the statement.

According to Chaudhury, the CPI(M)’s central campaign message will focus on how citizens can work collectively to address these issues and establish a democratic and accountable administration. He said the party would seek to bring people together around transparency, responsible governance and effective delivery of municipal services.

The upcoming municipal elections are expected to bring urban governance, civic infrastructure and local development into sharper focus, with political parties preparing to present their respective priorities before voters.
