Union Home Ministry has imposed an immediate five-year ban on two Tripura-based insurgent groups, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). The ban comes in response to their involvement in various subversive activities that have posed a threat to India’s sovereignty and integrity, as announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a notification.
The MHA stated that both the NLFT and the ATTF have openly declared their objective to establish an independent nation through the secession of Tripura from India. They have pursued this aim through armed struggle, often collaborating with other armed secessionist organizations in the northeastern region. Additionally, these groups have actively sought to incite the indigenous population of Tripura to support secessionist activities.
The central government’s decision is based on its assessment that the NLFT and the ATTF have been engaged in subversive and violent actions that undermine the authority of the government. Their activities have also spread terror and violence among the people while seeking to achieve their secessionist goals.
Both groups have been responsible for violent acts, including the killing of civilians and personnel from the police and security forces. They have also been involved in extortion of funds from the public, including businessmen and traders. Furthermore, these insurgent groups have established and maintained camps in neighboring countries, using them as safe havens for training, procurement of arms, and ammunition.
