Bumper spine gourd harvest in Kalyanpur boosts farmer income as favourable weather, improved farming techniques and stable market prices ensure high yields, steady demand, and expanded supply to regional markets despite storage and infrastructure challenges.
A strong agricultural season has brought renewed optimism to farmers in Kalyanpur subdivision, where a bumper harvest of spine gourd has significantly improved rural incomes. The vegetable, locally known for its nutritional and commercial value, has witnessed a notable surge in production this year, supported by favourable weather patterns and improved farming techniques.
Across key cultivation zones such as Ghilatali, Dakshin Ghilatali, and Madhya Kalyanpur, vast stretches of farmland are currently under spine gourd cultivation. Farmers report that yields have exceeded expectations, marking one of the most productive seasons in recent years. The crop, typically grown on trellis systems, has shown robust growth, reflecting a combination of scientific farming methods and natural climatic advantages.
Agricultural experts attribute this success to a mix of timely rainfall, optimal temperature conditions, and minimal pest infestations. Additionally, the use of improved seed varieties, proper land preparation, and consistent crop management practices have played a crucial role in boosting productivity. Experts note that such integrated approaches are increasingly helping farmers adapt to changing environmental conditions while maximizing output.
Despite a sharp increase in supply, market prices have remained stable, offering a dual advantage to cultivators. Wholesale prices for spine gourd in Kalyanpur markets are currently hovering around Rs 120 per kilogram, while retail prices range between Rs 140 and Rs 150 per kilogram. Market analysts suggest that steady consumer demand has prevented price fluctuations, ensuring that farmers continue to receive fair returns for their produce.
Local farmers have expressed satisfaction with both the quantity and quality of the harvest. A cultivator from Ghilatali highlighted that this season has delivered better yields and improved earnings compared to previous years. Encouraged by these results, many farmers are now planning to expand cultivation in the upcoming season, anticipating continued profitability.
The supply chain has also expanded beyond local consumption. Spine gourd from Kalyanpur is being transported to nearby regions such as Moharchhara and Teliamura, from where traders distribute it to larger markets, including those in Assam. This wider distribution network has further strengthened the economic prospects of the farming community.
However, challenges remain. Farmers have raised concerns about the lack of adequate cold storage facilities, which increases the risk of spoilage, especially during peak harvest periods. They have also called for improved access to agricultural credit and more direct marketing channels that would allow them to sell produce without relying heavily on intermediaries.

Officials from the agriculture department have acknowledged these concerns and stated that efforts are underway to support farmers through training programs, provision of quality seeds, and technical guidance. Authorities are also exploring ways to improve market linkages and infrastructure to ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
The bumper harvest in Kalyanpur not only reflects the resilience of farmers but also highlights the potential of strategic agricultural practices in driving rural development and economic stability.
