BSF fired a warning shot to stop an alleged smuggling attempt along the Indo–Bangladesh border in North Tripura, leaving a youth injured. Police and BSF have launched investigations as tension briefly rose in the Brajendranagar border area.
Tension gripped the Indo–Bangladesh border region of North Tripura on Monday morning after a young man sustained bullet injuries during an anti-smuggling operation conducted by the Border Security Force (BSF). The incident took place around 10:25 a.m. near Border Outpost (BOP) Brajendranagar, under the jurisdiction of 97 Battalion’s C Company, close to Border Fence Line (BFL) No. 138–139 and Gate No. 10.
The injured youth has been identified as Akash Das (27), a resident of Ward No. 2 under Agnipasha Gram Panchayat and the son of late Gopal Das. According to preliminary reports and official statements, Akash was allegedly attempting to cut through the border fencing with the intention of smuggling goods across into Bangladesh.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to BSF sources, personnel deployed on routine border patrolling noticed suspicious movement near the fencing. As they approached the spot, they claimed to have seen Akash attempting to breach the fence using cutting tools. The jawans issued verbal warnings instructing him to stop and step away from the restricted area.
However, when he allegedly ignored the warnings and continued attempting to cut the fence, the situation escalated. The BSF personnel reportedly fired one round to deter the intrusion and to prevent the suspected smuggling attempt. The bullet struck Akash in the abdomen, causing him to collapse near the fencing.
BSF officials stated that firing was done following established protocols after other measures failed to restrain the suspect. “The firing was executed solely to bring the situation under control and prevent illegal smuggling activity across an international border,” a senior BSF officer said.
Immediate Medical Response
Following the firing, BSF troops informed the local police and arranged for immediate medical assistance. Akash was rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where doctors conducted preliminary treatment. Medical sources confirmed that although he was conscious and stable, the bullet might still be lodged inside his abdomen. Considering the seriousness of his injury, he was referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical care and possible surgical intervention.
Doctors at Dharmanagar stated that his vital parameters were stable but further evaluation was necessary to determine whether surgical extraction of the bullet would be required.
Heightened Tension in the Locality
The incident triggered tension among residents of Brajendranagar and adjoining villages, particularly due to the proximity of the firing site to residential areas. Several locals gathered near the border fence upon hearing the gunshot, fearing a more serious confrontation between security forces and suspected smugglers.
Police officials and BSF personnel were deployed immediately to ensure the situation remained under control. Authorities urged residents to maintain calm and assured them that detailed inquiries were already underway.
Investigations Launched by Police and BSF
Both North Tripura Police and the BSF have launched independent investigations into the attempted smuggling and subsequent firing. Police are examining whether Akash acted alone or was part of a larger smuggling network operating along the Indo–Bangladesh border. The region has a history of smuggling activities involving cattle, contraband goods, and consumer products.
A senior police officer stated that interrogation would begin once Akash’s medical condition stabilizes. “We will look into all aspects, including the motive, involvement of others, and the type of goods intended for smuggling,” the officer said. Meanwhile, BSF is preparing a detailed report on the firing incident as per standard procedure.
Border Security and Smuggling Concerns
The Indo–Bangladesh border in North Tripura has been identified as a sensitive stretch where illegal movement and smuggling attempts occur frequently, despite enhanced surveillance. BSF continues to conduct regular patrols and deploy advanced monitoring equipment to curb cross-border illegal activities.
This incident once again highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in safeguarding the international border and preventing criminal activities. It also raises questions about local networks engaged in smuggling and the risks individuals take by attempting to breach high-security zones.
