Veteran politician and BJP MLA from Ramnagar Surajit Datta passed away tonight at around 11.30 pm. Datta (75), popularly called ‘Sunu da’, had been suffering from various ailments espeially kidney related complications due to high sugar and blood pressure. He had been under dialysis for the last years. As his condition deteriorated two days ago he was first admitted in an Agartala hospital and then shifted to AMRI Kolkata this afternoon. But at 11.30 pm he breathed his last.

State government had announced state mourning on Thursday.

In Agartaa hospital Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Union minister Pratima Bhowmik, Leader of the opposition Animesh Debbarma visited him.

Datta was first elected as a Congress candidate in 1988 from Ramnagar and became PWD minister. He later left Congress joined Trinamool Congress and then BJP. Every time since 1988 he continued to fight from Ramnagar and maintained the winning spree. Despite his illness Datta always remained close to the people and had maintained special bondage with his constitueny.

His mortals remains will be brought tomorrow. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
