BJP stages protest in Tripura’s Krishnapur demanding arrest of Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma over alleged extremist past and rally obstruction. Political tensions escalate in Khowai district as leaders trade sharp accusations.
Political tensions intensified in Tripura’s Khowai district on Sunday as supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest march in the Krishnapur Assembly constituency, demanding the arrest of Ranjit Debbarma, a legislator from the Tipra Motha Party. The protest followed an incident on Saturday in Ramchandraghat where a BJP motorcycle rally was allegedly obstructed, further deepening the political divide in the region.
The BJP supporters gathered in significant numbers, raising slogans and accusing Debbarma of inciting unrest. According to party leaders, the confrontation began when BJP leaders attempted to conduct a motorcycle rally in Ramchandraghat as part of their political outreach efforts. They alleged that activists affiliated with Tipra Motha intervened and blocked the rally, leading to heated exchanges between members of the two parties.
Speaking to reporters, MDC and BJP leader Bidyut Debbarma strongly criticized Ranjit Debbarma, accusing him of having a controversial past linked to extremist activities. He alleged that during his time as the head of the banned insurgent outfit All Tripura Tiger Force, Debbarma was involved in violent incidents across the state. These claims include serious allegations such as orchestrating killings, kidnappings, and acts of brutality during a turbulent period in Tripura’s history.
“When our leaders, including Minister Bikash Debbarma and local BJP leader Prasenjit Debbarma, went to lead the motorcycle rally at Ramchandraghat, they faced obstruction from Tipra Motha supporters under the leadership of MLA Ranjit Debbarma,” Bidyut Debbarma said. He further alleged that during the standoff, the MLA demanded the arrest of Prasenjit Debbarma, calling the move politically motivated.
Defending his party colleague, Bidyut Debbarma asserted that an individual with what he described as a “blood-stained past” does not have the moral standing to seek action against BJP leaders. He accused the Tipra Motha MLA of leveling baseless allegations and attempting to malign the image of BJP workers in the constituency.
The BJP leader also called upon victims of past insurgent violence to raise their voices. He urged families who suffered during the insurgency years to question the role of former militant leaders who are now active in mainstream politics. According to him, those who lost loved ones during periods of extremist violence deserve clarity and accountability.
Meanwhile, there has been no immediate official response from Ranjit Debbarma regarding the fresh allegations made by BJP leaders. The Tipra Motha Party has previously maintained that its leaders are committed to democratic processes and peaceful political engagement.
The protest march in Krishnapur passed off without major violence, though security personnel were deployed in the area to prevent escalation. Observers note that the incident underscores the fragile political climate in parts of Tripura, where historical insurgency-related issues continue to influence present-day politics.
The controversy also highlights the growing friction between the BJP and the Tipra Motha Party in tribal-dominated constituencies. As both parties seek to consolidate their support bases ahead of future political contests, confrontations such as the Ramchandraghat episode are likely to intensify rhetoric and sharpen rivalries.

Political analysts suggest that while allegations related to past insurgent activities carry emotional weight, any legal action would require substantiated evidence and due process under the law. For now, the focus remains on whether authorities will initiate any inquiry into the rally obstruction or the claims made during the protest march.
As tensions simmer in Khowai district, residents await further developments, hoping that political disagreements do not spiral into larger unrest in the state.
