The state government has started working for expansion of handloom industry taking new work plans. As a result, the handloom workers being encouraged are also coming forward in more numbers. Our tradition is connected with this industry. We cannot let this be lost at any cost, stated Labour Minister Bhagaban Chandra Das after inaugurating 5-day Unakoti District-Level Handloom Fair at Dhan Singh Choudhury Memorial English Medium School ground in Kanchanbari yesterday. With the joint efforts of Development Commission (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles and Tripura Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation Ltd, the 5-day Handloom Fair is being organized which will continue till March 6.  Total 25 stalls have opened in the Handloom Fair.  Cultural events will be organized every evening.

Labour Minister in the programme said, the fair holds great importance. The tradition of making handlooms had been going on since long ago. This industry would not be behind if the industry would keep up with the present time. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, initiatives are being taken by the central and state government to make the handloom industry popular among the public with the touch of modernness.

Sabhadhipati of Unakoti Zila Parishad Amalendu Das said, more emphasis must be given on handloom industry to strengthen rural economy. The present government is working with this aim. MLA Sudhangshu Das said, it is possible to build Aatmanirbhar Bharat through this industry. He called upon Self-Help Groups to involve with handloom industry. President of Tripura Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation LtdBolaiGhoswami informed that 4 new handloom clusters were formed in the state this year. Their training has started recently. Proposal has been sent to the central government for 7 more clusters. Others present in the programme were Deputy Director of Agartala Weevers Service Centre Lakhan Chandra Basak, Joint Director of Handicrafts, Handlooms and Sericulture department NimaiMurasing, Kanchanbari Gram Panchayat Head Biplab Singh Choudhury, retired teacher Jadulal Roy.
