TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee sustained a head injury during a protest outside Chanditala Police Station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district after allegedly being hit by a stone. The incident comes a day after Abhishek Banerjee faced attacks in Sonarpur, escalating political tensions across Bengal.
Political tensions in West Bengal intensified on Sunday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee sustained a head injury during a protest outside Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district. The incident occurred while the senior Trinamool leader was participating in a demonstration against the arrest and detention of party workers and had arrived to submit a memorandum to police authorities.
According to Trinamool Congress leaders, Banerjee was protesting alongside party supporters outside the police station when a group allegedly displayed black flags and raised slogans against him. Amid the commotion, stones were reportedly hurled from a distance, one of which struck the MP on the head. Visuals from the scene showed Banerjee falling on the road after sustaining the injury, prompting concern among party workers gathered at the protest site.
Following the incident, Kalyan Banerjee directly accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack. Addressing supporters, he alleged that opposition leaders were attempting to silence Trinamool Congress workers through intimidation and violence. The MP claimed that the attack was politically motivated and urged people across West Bengal to remain vigilant against what he described as growing lawlessness.
Banerjee also launched a sharp attack on the state police, alleging negligence and accusing local law enforcement officials of failing to provide adequate security during the protest. He claimed that the police did not take sufficient measures to prevent the confrontation despite tensions being evident at the gathering.
In his public remarks after the incident, Banerjee appealed to residents of West Bengal to continue protesting against what he described as increasing political violence. He urged citizens to raise their voices against intimidation and asserted that the Trinamool Congress would continue to resist such actions under the leadership of Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee.
However, the BJP strongly rejected the allegations leveled by the Trinamool MP. Party leaders denied any involvement in the incident and claimed that Banerjee had faced public anger from individuals who were dissatisfied with the ruling party. BJP representatives argued that the confrontation reflected widespread resentment among sections of the population rather than any organized attack by their party.
The incident comes just a day after another major controversy involving Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. On Saturday, Abhishek Banerjee visited Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district to meet the family of a Trinamool worker who had allegedly died in post-poll violence. During the visit, he reportedly encountered hostile crowds, with shoes, eggs, and stones allegedly thrown in his direction.
According to reports, slogans were raised against the Trinamool leader, forcing him to wear a helmet for protection. Despite the precaution, his clothes were reportedly torn during the ensuing scuffle. Police personnel and central security forces later intervened to escort him safely from the area.
Abhishek Banerjee subsequently alleged that the disruption was a pre-planned attack organized by BJP supporters. The BJP, however, dismissed those accusations and maintained that the protests reflected genuine public dissatisfaction.
The back-to-back incidents involving two prominent Trinamool leaders within 48 hours have intensified the political atmosphere in West Bengal. With both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP trading accusations over the events, the developments are expected to fuel fresh political debates and raise concerns over escalating confrontations in the state’s already charged political environment.
