BCCI’s Rs 23 crore indoor cricket facility in Rangpo, Sikkim, will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on April 28, boosting Northeast cricket infrastructure with modern training amenities and year-round practice support despite long monsoon disruptions.
A major boost to cricket infrastructure in India’s Northeast is set to unfold as a newly constructed indoor training facility in Sikkim prepares for its formal unveiling later this month. The project, built at Rangpo, reflects a broader push to strengthen sporting ecosystems in regions often challenged by weather and limited resources.
The indoor cricket academy, developed under the supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is located within the Sikkim Cricket Association ground in Mining, Rangpo. Estimated at a cost of Rs 23 crore, the facility is designed to offer year-round training opportunities for aspiring cricketers.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia visited the site on Thursday to review preparations ahead of the inauguration. The ceremony is scheduled for April 28 and will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sikkim.
Speaking to reporters, Saikia confirmed that the Rangpo academy is part of a larger initiative that includes similar indoor cricket facilities across five other Northeastern states. These projects will be inaugurated simultaneously from Gangtok, marking a coordinated effort to elevate cricket standards across the region.
The newly built complex features modern infrastructure such as indoor net practice lanes, a fully equipped gymnasium, and a swimming pool. These amenities are expected to significantly improve training conditions, especially in a region that experiences prolonged monsoon seasons.
Saikia highlighted the strategic importance of indoor facilities in the Northeast, where heavy rainfall can disrupt outdoor sports for up to six to seven months each year. He noted that the initiative was originally launched in 2022 under the leadership of Jay Shah, who aimed to ensure uninterrupted training for players despite climatic challenges.
“The idea was to create an environment where cricketers could continue practicing without seasonal interruptions,” Saikia explained. “This project reflects a long-term commitment to nurturing talent in the Northeast.”
During his inspection, Saikia expressed admiration for the quality of the infrastructure developed by the Sikkim Cricket Association. He described the ground as “beautiful” and praised its international-standard pitch and well-maintained outfield, noting that the scenic surroundings further enhance the appeal of the venue.
The Rangpo facility is expected to play a pivotal role in identifying and developing cricketing talent from Sikkim and neighboring states. With access to advanced training infrastructure, local players will have greater opportunities to compete at national and international levels.

Officials believe that the simultaneous inauguration of six indoor cricket centers will serve as a turning point for sports development in the Northeast. By addressing long-standing infrastructural gaps, the initiative aims to integrate the region more closely into India’s mainstream cricketing framework.
As anticipation builds ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, the Rangpo academy stands as a symbol of growing investment in sports infrastructure beyond traditional urban centers. The project underscores a broader vision of inclusive development, where emerging regions are equipped with the tools needed to excel in competitive sports.
