Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC) celebrated its silver jubilee with a blood donation camp in Agartala, honoring Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya’s legacy. Minister Sudhangshu Das and Mayor Dipak Majumder praised the college’s 25-year journey, highlighting its academic growth, inclusivity, alumni achievements, and commitment to community service and social responsibility.
Agartala witnessed a vibrant blend of history, heritage, and humanity as Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC) marked its silver jubilee in a remarkable celebration that honored its 25-year journey of academic excellence and community service. The occasion was graced by the presence of Minister for SC Welfare Sudhangshu Das, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, and several dignitaries, educators, alumni, and students.
The highlight of the silver jubilee was a blood donation camp, symbolizing the institution’s deep-rooted spirit of service. Beyond the academic milestones, the event reflected BBMC’s commitment to shaping responsible citizens and fostering values of compassion and civic engagement.
Tribute to a Visionary King
In his address, Minister Sudhangshu Das paid glowing tribute to Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, describing him as the last illustrious monarch of Tripura and a visionary who laid the foundation for modern education in the state. He recalled how the Maharaja’s legacy continued to inspire generations, noting that BBMC stands as one of the living monuments to his foresight.
Das reminded the gathering that the college was initially affiliated with the University of Calcutta in 1947, long before Tripura established its own higher education system. With the eventual creation of Maharaja Bir Bikram University, the institution now proudly operates under the very name of its founder.
From Evening College to Co-Educational Hub
Tracing BBMC’s evolution, the Minister reflected on its early days as Bir Bikram Evening College in 1969, designed to meet the educational needs of working youth. Over the decades, the college expanded its academic offerings and transitioned into a day college. In 2022, BBMC became a co-educational institution, opening new avenues of learning for women and marking a significant stride toward inclusivity and gender equality.
Das praised this transformation as a reflection of both societal progress and the college’s enduring mission to empower all sections of society through education.
Alumni as Torchbearers of Progress
Pride in BBMC’s alumni featured prominently in the Minister’s speech. Many former students of the college, he noted, have gone on to hold distinguished positions not only in Tripura but across India and abroad. Their achievements, he said, were a testament to the strong academic foundation laid by the institution and its dedicated faculty.
Quoting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar—“They cannot make history who forget history”—Das urged students and educators alike to honor their past while striving to build a brighter future. He encouraged them to carry forward the legacy of Maharaja Bir Bikram with renewed commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and service.
Humanity in Action: The Blood Donation Camp
Beyond ceremonial addresses, the celebration found its most profound expression in the blood donation camp organized as part of the jubilee. Dozens of students, staff, and volunteers came forward to donate blood, underscoring the values of empathy and social responsibility that BBMC seeks to instill.
Minister Das, while lauding the donors, observed, “Donating clothes or money may bring temporary happiness, but donating blood can save a life.” He praised the initiative as a meaningful way to mark the institution’s silver jubilee, turning commemoration into action that directly benefits the community.
Mayor’s Words of Encouragement
Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder echoed the Minister’s sentiments, emphasizing BBMC’s enduring role in shaping Tripura’s intellectual and cultural landscape. He thanked all participants in the blood donation camp and applauded the college’s efforts to link academic growth with social responsibility.
Majumder noted that such initiatives inspire students not just to excel in academics but also to contribute meaningfully to society, reinforcing the idea that true education extends beyond the classroom.
Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Service and Learning
As BBMC celebrates 25 years, the institution’s silver jubilee stands as a milestone in its journey but also a springboard for future aspirations. With its roots deeply tied to the vision of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, and with the support of its alumni, faculty, and students, the college continues to strengthen its dual mission of academic excellence and community engagement.
