Eminent agricultural scientist and BJP leader Dr Baharul Islam Majumdar passed away on Monday night in G B Hospital. He was 65 and a bachelor. He was suffering from cancer and also had serious heart related ailments.
Only two months ago his younger brother Mujibar Islam Majumdar- also a political personality of the state had died due to cardiac arrest.
Dr Baharul Islam Majumdar’s death sent a shock wave across the state as he was not only a very popular personality acceptable to all but also involved in various NGOs and social activities . He was Secretary General of Vivekananda Vichar manch and president of Wakf Board of Tripura. He had taken voluntary retirement from government of Tripura job as Director of Horticulture and joined the BJP in 2017. He contested 2018 assembly elections from Boxanagar as BJP candidate but could not make it through.
Dr Majumdar was also an internationally famed agriculture scientist who had done pioneering work in introducing SRI system of paddy plantation. He used to be consulted on agricultre related matters by foreign countries also.
Dr Majumdar who had open heart operations some years ago was highly diabetic and also developed cancer. He was admitted in GB Hospital. Last night he breathed his last.
As soon as the news of his demise came a pall of gloom descended in the state and social media got crowded with condolence message. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who visited Dr Majumdar in the hospital recently also took to tweet to express his condolence.
