The Assam Congress has lodged an FIR against senior BJP leaders over a violent incident at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati. The complaint alleges vandalism, intimidation, and assault, including an attack on a police officer. The FIR demands arrests, witness protection, and a thorough probe into the August 31 violence.
The political atmosphere in Assam has intensified following a violent incident at the state Congress headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, in Guwahati. On Monday, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against several senior leaders and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of vandalism, intimidation, and assault during an attack on August 31.
The FIR, filed at Bhangagarh police station by APCC general secretary (administration) Pradyut Kr. Bhuyan, details a series of alleged offences carried out by BJP leaders and supporters under the pretext of gheraoing the Congress office. According to the complaint, the BJP group vandalised banners and posters, attempted to storm the premises, and intimidated Congress workers, including women party members present at the scene.
BJP Leaders Named in the FIR
In a move that has escalated political tensions, the FIR specifically named several high-profile BJP leaders. Among them were Assam BJP vice president Ratna Singh, Pradesh media convenor Rupam Goswami, vice president Juri Sharma Bordoloi, spokesperson Rajiv Sharma, Gunjan Barman, Guwahati City District BJYM president Niharendra Sarma, GMDA member Purabi Roy, and Siddhanku Ankur Barua. The complaint also mentioned several other unidentified BJP workers who allegedly participated in the attack.
According to Congress officials, the group unlawfully assembled outside Rajiv Bhawan around 2 p.m. before trying to barge into the premises. The incident, they alleged, was not a spontaneous protest but a coordinated attempt to intimidate and disrupt the opposition party’s functioning.
Violations Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023
The FIR outlined that multiple offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, were committed during the violent episode. These included charges of unlawful assembly, rioting, criminal trespass, mischief, criminal intimidation, and obstruction of public authority.
One of the most significant aspects of the FIR was the mention of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mrinal Deka, who was present on duty to maintain law and order. According to the complaint, Deka was assaulted during the incident, with black ink allegedly thrown on his face and uniform, thereby obstructing his official duties and undermining public authority.
Congress Demands Swift Action
Following the filing of the FIR, the APCC demanded the immediate arrest of the accused BJP leaders and workers. The party also called for strict measures to protect witnesses and prevent further intimidation. Additionally, the Congress urged the police to review CCTV footage and other video evidence to ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
Speaking to the media, senior Congress leaders condemned the violence as “a planned attempt by the BJP to intimidate the opposition in Assam.” They argued that such attacks not only disrupt political activity but also weaken the democratic framework of the state. “An assault on political offices and workers is an assault on democracy itself,” one leader remarked.
Police Response and Political Reactions
Despite the serious allegations and detailed FIR, the police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the case. Authorities confirmed that the matter is under investigation, but no timeline has been shared regarding potential action against the accused individuals.
The incident has triggered sharp political reactions across Assam. While Congress leaders have demanded accountability, BJP leaders have yet to issue a detailed public statement regarding the accusations. Political observers suggest that the episode may deepen the rivalry between the two major parties in the state ahead of upcoming elections.
A Test for Law and Order in Assam
The attack on Rajiv Bhawan has raised broader concerns about law and order in Assam, particularly regarding political clashes. The alleged assault on a senior police officer during the chaos highlights the vulnerability of public officials when caught in politically charged violence. Analysts warn that the state government’s handling of the FIR will be closely scrutinized, as it may set a precedent for how similar incidents are dealt with in the future.
