Assam Congress forms seven special teams to monitor vote counting on May 4, ensuring transparency, strongroom security, and coordination across districts after high voter turnout in Assembly elections, strengthening oversight of EVM handling and counting centres statewide.
Seven specialised monitoring teams have been constituted to oversee the vote counting process for the recently concluded Assembly elections in Assam, with polling results scheduled to be declared on May 4, according to party officials.
The decision, taken by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), is aimed at strengthening ground-level vigilance and ensuring transparency during the crucial counting phase. Senior leaders indicated that the initiative is designed to closely monitor counting centres and strongrooms, while also improving coordination between candidates and district-level party units.
A formal statement issued by APCC general secretary Jitendra Singh, who is also the party’s in-charge for Assam, along with APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, outlined the structure and responsibilities of the teams. These teams will be deployed across districts that participated in polling on April 9, a phase that recorded a voter turnout of 85.96 percent—among the highest in recent electoral cycles in the state.
Each team has been entrusted with specific responsibilities, including the inspection of strongrooms where electronic voting machines (EVMs) are securely stored, coordination with party candidates, and maintaining regular communication with district Congress committees. The move reflects a strategic emphasis on ensuring procedural integrity and swift response to any concerns that may arise during the counting process.
In Upper Assam, a dedicated team comprising senior leaders such as Debabrata Saikia, Raju Sahu, Utpal Gogoi, Rajkumar Nalatira Neog, David Phukan, and Mrityunjay Duarah will supervise districts including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
For the North Bank region, responsibilities have been assigned to leaders such as Ripun Bora, Ghana Burhagohain, J.P. Das, Shailen Sonowal, Kartik Kurmi, Shankar Kutum, and Meghnath Chetri.
Central Assam and the hill districts—Nagaon, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao—will be overseen by a team led by Bhimananda Bora, alongside Diganta Barman, Satyabrata Kalita, Mira Borthakur Goswami, Swapan Kar, Mrinal Hazarika, Akram Hussain, Nirmal Langthasa, Ratan Engti, Augustine Engti, Ashok Teron, Pallav Chetia, and Charaniki Engti.

Similarly, Lower Assam, the Barak Valley, and the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) have been assigned separate teams comprising experienced leaders to ensure seamless coordination and effective monitoring.
Party officials confirmed that members of these teams will begin visiting counting centres ahead of May 4 and will remain actively engaged until the entire counting process concludes. The initiative underscores the Congress party’s focus on safeguarding electoral procedures, maintaining transparency, and ensuring that the mandate of voters is accurately reflected in the final results.
