Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni expects a tough FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against Switzerland, praising their physical strength and quality. Scaloni backs his team’s fighting spirit, hints at Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez starting together, and calls for better recovery time between matches.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has warned his players to expect another intense battle when they face Switzerland in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday, insisting there are no easy opponents left in the tournament.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Scaloni praised Switzerland’s quality, physicality, and consistency at the international level, emphasizing that his side would need to be at its very best to secure a place in the semifinals.

Switzerland booked their place in the last eight after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw over 120 minutes in Vancouver. Their disciplined defensive display and resilience highlighted why they remain one of Europe’s most competitive teams on the global stage.

Argentina, meanwhile, has experienced a challenging route to the quarterfinals. The South American giants edged Cabo Verde 3-2 after extra time in the Round of 16 before producing a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in another thrilling knockout encounter.

Scaloni acknowledged that his players have been tested throughout the competition but believes those difficult matches have strengthened the team’s resolve.

“There are no easy opponents at this stage. We know that,” Scaloni said. “Switzerland has an excellent squad. They compete against the best national teams, they push forward, they have a long history at World Cups and they’re physically strong.”

The Argentine manager also admitted that he had expected Colombia to progress but credited Switzerland for earning their place in the quarterfinals through determination and quality.

“They’ll be difficult. We respect them a lot. They eliminated Colombia and we thought Colombia could win because they had been having a good World Cup,” he added.

Scaloni indicated there may be minimal changes to the starting lineup that secured victory over Egypt. One of the biggest talking points ahead of the match is the possibility of both Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez starting together after their impressive performances in the previous game.

The coach expressed satisfaction with the pair’s work rate, especially their commitment without possession, describing them as valuable assets both offensively and defensively.

“Lautaro and Julian have played very well when they’ve come onto the pitch,” Scaloni said. “They’ve done even more than what they had to do, even when we didn’t have the ball.”

Although Argentina has traditionally deployed only one of the two forwards from the start, Scaloni admitted their successful partnership against Egypt has created an attractive tactical option.

“Usually only one of them plays, apart from the last match, but when they were on the pitch together they did many positive things. It’s an option to have them both out there,” he explained.

The 48-year-old also reflected on Argentina’s performances during the tournament, acknowledging that matching the extraordinary level displayed during their victorious 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar is not always possible.

“You can’t always play as well as we did in Qatar,” Scaloni said. “That’s what we aim for, but it’s difficult because the opponent is also at a high level.”

Despite not always producing their most fluent football, Scaloni praised his squad’s determination and competitive mentality, qualities that have helped them overcome adversity in consecutive knockout matches.

“This team rises to the occasion and competes. The players know that tomorrow they are going to play one of the most important matches of their lives,” he said.

The Argentina coach also raised concerns over the demanding tournament schedule under the expanded World Cup format. While noting that Argentina had not faced the same travel burden as some other nations, he suggested FIFA should consider allowing teams more recovery time between matches.

“Fortunately, we haven’t had to travel as much as teams such as Colombia, who had to cross different time zones. That has an impact,” Scaloni said.

“With this new format, you have to adapt to everything.”

As Argentina prepares for another high-stakes encounter, Scaloni remains confident that his players possess the resilience, experience, and determination needed to overcome a physically imposing Swiss side and continue their pursuit of another FIFA World Cup title.
