All-Time High GST Collection: India’s GST collection hit a record ₹2.36 lakh crore in April 2025, signaling strong economic growth and improved compliance, says FM Nirmala Sitharaman.

India’s goods and services tax (GST) collections surged by 12.6 percent to an all-time high of 2.37 lakh crore rupees in April in comparison to the same month last year. According to government data, the Central GST collection for the month stood at 48 thousand 634 crore rupees and State GST at 59 thousand 372 crore rupees.

The integrated GST collection amounted to over 1.1 lakh crore rupees, and cess was at 13 thousand 451 crore rupees. GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 10.7 percent to about 1.9 lakh crore rupees, while revenue from imported goods was up 20.8 percent to 46 thousand 913 crore rupees.

Total refunds issued during April were 27 thousand 341 crore rupees, witnessing an uptick of 48.3 percent. Net GST collections, after discounting the refunds, for last month rose 9.1 percent to about 2.09 lakh crore rupees.

The GST mop-up was 2.10 lakh crore rupees in April 2024, the second highest collection ever since the roll-out of the indirect tax regime on July 1, 2017. In March 2025, the collection was 1.96 lakh crore rupees.

Agensies added : Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that the record Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in April underscores the strength of the Indian economy and the success of cooperative federalism.

Expressing her appreciation on social media platform X, Sitharaman said, “Deepest gratitude to the taxpayers whose contributions and faith in the GST architecture drive the nation’s progress. Their support reflects a shared commitment to building a Viksit Bharat.”

She also extended her congratulations to the Finance Ministers of all states and the state GST authorities, acknowledging their vital role as equal partners in the GST system. In addition, she praised the field officers of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for their sincere efforts in boosting collections.

The surge in GST revenue has been attributed to increased economic activity and improved tax compliance. Domestic transactions contributed ₹1.9 lakh crore in April, showing a 10.7% growth, while GST from imported goods soared by 20.8% to ₹46,913 crore. Refunds issued during the month increased sharply by 48.3% to ₹27,341 crore.

In March 2025, GST revenue stood at ₹1.96 lakh crore—up 9.9% year-on-year—again reflecting robust compliance and economic momentum. On a month-on-month basis, collections in April were 6.8% higher than the ₹1.84 lakh crore recorded in February.

March’s gross GST revenue included ₹38,100 crore from Central GST (CGST), ₹49,900 crore from State GST (SGST), ₹95,900 crore from Integrated GST (IGST), and ₹12,300 crore from compensation cess. In contrast, February’s collections comprised ₹35,204 crore (CGST), ₹43,704 crore (SGST), ₹90,870 crore (IGST), and ₹13,868 crore (compensation cess).

The top five GST-contributing states in March were Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.
