Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder leads eviction drive at Lake Chowmuhni Market, warning illegal encroachers. AMC confirms regular operations across city markets to clear roads, ensure smooth traffic movement, and improve public convenience.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday carried out a fresh eviction drive at the busy Lake Chowmuhni Market area, reaffirming its firm stance against illegal encroachments on public roads and footpaths. The operation was conducted in the presence of Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder and senior municipal officials, as part of a sustained effort to improve traffic flow and ensure public convenience.
The eviction drive targeted vendors who had been running their businesses by occupying roadways and pedestrian walkways, causing congestion and inconvenience to commuters and local residents. Municipal workers, assisted by enforcement personnel, removed temporary stalls, sheds, and other unauthorized structures that had encroached upon public spaces.
Speaking to the media during the operation, Mayor Dipak Majumder made it clear that such drives are not one-time actions but part of a continuous campaign by the civic body. He stated that the municipal administration is committed to maintaining order in public spaces and ensuring that roads and footpaths remain accessible to everyone.
“Eviction drives are being conducted regularly. Anyone found illegally occupying public roads or footpaths for business purposes will face strict action,” the Mayor said. He emphasized that repeated warnings have already been issued to vendors, and those who continue to violate regulations cannot expect leniency.
The Mayor further informed that eviction operations will be carried out at different times of the day to prevent encroachers from returning once officials leave. According to him, irregular timings are being adopted strategically to ensure the long-term effectiveness of the drive and discourage repeat violations.
Majumder stressed that traffic congestion in key commercial areas has become a serious concern for the city administration. Illegal roadside vending not only obstructs vehicular movement but also poses safety risks for pedestrians. “Our priority is smooth traffic movement and public safety. The administration will not compromise on these issues,” he asserted.
He also announced that similar eviction drives will soon be conducted in other major markets and densely populated areas of Agartala. Areas with heavy footfall and frequent traffic bottlenecks have been identified, and action will be taken in phases.
While acknowledging that street vendors depend on daily business for their livelihood, the Mayor clarified that the administration is not against lawful vending. He urged vendors to operate only in designated zones and follow municipal guidelines. “We are not against business, but it must be done within the framework of the law,” he said.

Local residents and commuters largely welcomed the drive, expressing relief over the temporary easing of congestion in the Lake Chowmuhni area. However, some vendors voiced concerns over the loss of income, highlighting the need for alternative vending spaces.
The municipal administration reiterated that maintaining discipline in public spaces is essential for a growing city like Agartala and warned that eviction drives will continue until illegal encroachments are fully removed.
