Terming the situation in Afghanistan ‘extremely alarming’, the Congress on Monday questioned if the Narendra Modi government had any evacuation plans for Indian citizens, and accused it of maintaining a silence over the issue.

“Situation in Afghanistan is extremely alarming. India’s strategic interests are at stake. Safety and security of our embassy and its personnel as well as that of Indian Citizens is at stake,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a statement.

He said Congress stands for protecting India’s interests and expects a “mature political and diplomatic response from our government over the complete collapse of goby in Afghanistan and Taliban takeover.”

He accused the government of maintaining a “stunning silence”.

“The Modi government’s refusal to set in motion a well thought out plan to evacuate our citizens is a gross abdication of its duty and is totally unacceptable,” he said.

Surjewala added that Taliban and Haqqani Network connections with Pakistan’s ISI and JeM, LeT, JuD are well known.

“There is an urgent need to revisit our geo-political interests in this background and its impact on J&K. Sadly, the Modi government is oblivious of the same,” he said.

Congress demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spell out India’s policy for safe return of its citizens, embassy personnel as also on future relationship with Afghanistan.

The Taliban entered Kabul on Sunday, after which President Ashraf Ghani announced his resignation and left the country.
