Two TSR officers—one Subedar ( Inspector) and one Naib Subedar ( Sub Inspector)- belonging to 5th Battalion were shot dead by a colleague Rifleman Sukanta Das at a ONGC GCS , Konaban in Sepahajala district. The 5th TSR battalion is assigned to security of the ONGC assets in the state.
The incident took place at 9.30 am on Saturday morning when following an altercation rifleman Sukanata Das in a fit of rage opened fire from his service rifle killing Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia on the spot. Naib Subedar Kiran Jamatia was fatally injured and was rushed to AGMC in Agartala where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sukanta Das soon after the shooting rode a motorbike and went straight to Madupur Police station with his weapon and surrendered. Das confessed that the he had killed his colleagues and was immediately arrested.
Das said the brawl took place regarding sanction of leave. The rifleman said, his leave had been sanctioned but he was not being relieved from his duties. Instead he was He was detailed for refresher training. This infuriated . As an altercation began with Inspector ( Subedar) Marka Singh Jamatia he in a fit of rage opened fire at him and also at Sub Inspector ( Naib Subedar) Kiran Jamatia.
While SP Sepahijala Krishnendu Chakravertty rushed to the Madhupur police station and interrogated rifeman Sukanta Das and then visited the spot, IG TSR G S Rao and DIG TSR Soumitra Dhar also reached Madhupur.
Sources said, after post-mortem of the two slain TSR personnel they will be offered last salute at 1stBattalion TSR where DG V S Yadav and other senior officials will remain present.
Rifleman Sukanta Das is married to Mallika Reang, who is also Woman Constable posted at RK Pur police station.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb expressed his grief at the killing of two TSR officers. In his twitter message the Chief Minister said : ‘My homage to our brave personnel of Tripura State Rifles, Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia & Nb Subedar Kiran Jamatia who died while on duty today. My condolences to bereaved family. .. Tripura govt has decided to give ₹ 5 Lakh each to bereaved families. They will also get benefits under the Die-in-harness scheme’.
